Also, the sound is OK, but I was hoping for something a little deeper. Gurgly even. Just mean. Not loud, just mean. Any suggestions on what to do?

I had the same problem with my Silverado when i had a true dual system installed (seperate pipes from manifolds to the mufflers and oth the rear). I complained to the muffler shop and they tried a thing or two , even changed the mufflers to an almost free flowing muffler (flo pro) with little change. The more i drove the truck the more it got it's power back. Right after it was done , off the line was not too bad but around 30 km/h if you stepped on it , it just seemed to be bagged. Now after about 7 months , off the line it will smoke them , and around 30 km/h when you open it up it just plain hauls ass. I say drive it for a while before you go wasting money on changing the muffler , for one it will change sound after a while and two, most likely the power loss will come back after your trucks computer has made the necessary changes to the added ability to exhale. I agree with nineball , either mod your existing air intake (
www.sshotrods.com) and change out the air filter for a k&n or get a complete cold ait intake kit. From your description all you did was add in one muffler not two, so there should not be that much of a decrease in back pressure to cause a problem, so like i said drive it for a few weeks and see if it improves first. Mine defnietly did.
