My 2.4L chrysler engine is making a clicking type noise. It can be heard most at idle. Has anyone had this problem with their car???

sounds like your rocker arms or hydraulic lash adjusters are lacking oil. Check the level of your oil and add as needed.

I dont think this noise is the typical lifter tap noise. It sounds more like a clacking noise. It is not rhytmic. I have removed the drive belts and it is still making the noise.

I have exactly the same problem. Driving me f$$king crazy. Seems to be coming from somewhere around the inlet manifold.

Have you had any luck finding a fix?

Is the clicking noise unusually loud or has it always had it and you are wondering what it is?

It did not have the noise when I bought it new. It has gotten progressively louder. Sounds like a damn diesel engine now.

Its almost like if the timing was too far advanced or some kind of valve noise but I can't figure it out. I listened to a new one and it did not sound like that but I also listened to one the same age and it was loud too, but not as loud as mine?

Any ideas?

What year and how many miles does it have?
Valve train noise is a problem with the DOHC neons as well (same head). They tend to wear out and start making noise b/c some people rev them to 7200+ RPMS a lot.
The cheapest fix for the Neons is to get a new set of PT Cruiser (improved design) lifters and followers. You can install them without removing the cam if you carefully loosen them just enough to get the lifters (and followers) out and put the new ones in. Usually the wearout is attributed to prolonged dirty oil or air bubbles in the oil from high RPM operation. Set of lifters and followers I hear is about $150-$175.

2004 with only 26K so I dont know if it is a wear problem. Always had good oil and filters.

Thanks for the info though. If anyone else has any suggestions I would love to hear them. the guys at the Dodge dealer dont have a clue.
