ive got a 2002 taurus with about 70k on it. the cars bucking at about 3800 to 4000 rpms consistantly. runs fine below that and at any speed as long as below 3800 rpm. have already changed fuel filter and pump by a repair shop. any other ideas?

Might not hurt to check your wires and plugs.

i'll be changing the wires and plugs this weekend. i had a couple of plugs pulled and they werent that bad. the car runs good as long as it doesnt hit the 3800 rpm level and starts bucking (as long as i'm not flooring it, the car will go up to eighty or more miles an hour with no problem). also, milage is down to 20 or less a gallon now. i used to have a check engine light, thats when the fuel filter and pump got changed and hasnt come on since (nope, dont know what the code read). i also notice if i drive the car awhile, i can flutter the pedal if it starts to buck on me and it while sometimes allow over 4000 rmp.

The one thing that makes me think that wires/plugs isn't going to fix this is that everything works fine up to 3800.

But I think you just implied that if you floor the accelerator, it still bucks. So I would definitely do a wire swap, at least if you are still using the factory wires. And again, plugs wouldn't hurt (although it may not be necessary--I think some '02s come with platinum plugs standard, but don't quote me on that.) Additionally, there is a decent chance that your gas mileage will improve at least a little. If you notice that this is getting worse over time, I have to think wires may cure this.

Certainly, if the engine light comes back, have the code read. Big auto parts stores (e.g. AutoZone) generally will read your codes for free. Someone more knowledgeable here than me may know whether the code stays in memory even if the engine light goes off--if so, you may still be able to pull the code at a parts store.

If you still can't solve the problem... When did you change that fuel filter? You may have an ignition problem somewhere--fuel pump, injectors, etc. Or perhaps a bad sensor, though I'd like to think the engine line would tell you so (but it doesn't always).

Let us know how it goes!

my 2001 sable has a hugh miss right about the time you give it enough gas to kick down a gear it bucks. I has going to change fuel filter but when I floor it still misses but continues to accelerate. My car has 120,000 on it and has never been serviced other than oil change. I know! .... Tune it up and change the fuel filter and have the trans serviced. I just want to know if the wire and plugs finally solved the problem. Thanks for your in put.

Oh, No check engine light, ever. Yes it works at start test cycle, but has never come on to report a code.

I think 20 MPG is pretty good for someone trying to get max RPM out of his engine.

changes the plugs and wires, milage per gallon went up but will still buch sometimes. noticed that it will buck when cold out but after it bucks a couple of times while driving, will smooth out and then not be a problem for awhile.

3,800 - 4,000 RPM maxing out a V6? naw.. You can get some RPMs out of some V6s, espically the old Ford 60 degree engines. They need a mid/high cam though..

I wouldn't drive a Taurus like that though, the tranny will drop on you faster than a bird shitting on someones head.

ok well I have done everything that has been suggested here.
My fuel filter, plugs and wires, and we even had the computer flashed and reprogrammed, apparently that was a manufactory glitch and with this glitch they had to raise the idle. So after all of this is taken care of the car still bucks in between 3000 and 4000 rpm's and the gas pedal vibrates before it bucks.

The car runs great otherwise, but when I go up steep hills or go to pass another car it bucks so any other suggestions I have a open ear. O and it NEVER throws a check engine light...nor when did it read out anything when hooked up to the diagnostic computer.

thank you
