Question Check Transmission -- Manual

How do I check the manual transmission oil level for my '95 Jetta? I found the plug on the driver's side of the engine block, but I don't know what the level should be. Should it be visible? If I push a flexible tube down the hole as far as it will go, I get nothing.

even

Oil level should be even with the bottom of the hole from what I understand.
