Question Hesitation problems on a 94

Hey all, having some problems with my girlfriends 94 Grand Am. It has 97,000 miles on it, 3.1 V6. Seems like when you give it gas, it hesitates before it kicks in. Just tonight I replaced the air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve, plugs and new wires, cleaned out the throttle body, and now im still stumped. Wondering what might be the problem. What other areas shoud I look at to try to fix this problem ie maybe a clogged cat, or fuel pump?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Michael

I would check fuel pressure to make sure the fuel pump is functioning properly and if you haven;t replaced it, I would recommend replacing the Cap and rotor.

This vehicle would have electronic igniton (ignition module and coils),no cap and rotor. Make sure you clean the IAC (idle air control) valve and I would have the fuel injection system professionally flushed. You've covered the rest of the basics.

Thanks for correcting me I wasn't sure if they did or didn't. Glad someone filled me in on that. Thanks again

Does it sometimes sound like the engine is skipping/missing? Your problem sounds exactly like mine and it was the ignition coil housing that needed to be replaced.

A possibility could be the EGR value.

Check enigne light came on today.... took it to Advance Auto and had them hook up the OBD, and it is the EGR valve malfunctioning. The rep told me to try to clean it, and go from there. I am only used to working on imports, not too keen on domestic applications. Where exactly is the EGR valve on a 94 3.1 V6? Thanks for all your help!

Great you found the problem. Just have to remove a couple of bolts and spray some cleaner in the holes and use a small pick to get the grit out.

Here is a great site that shows where all the parts are

What kind of cleaner would you recomend? Advance Auto had to order the gasket, not in stock as usual. Not sure if certain cleaners might harm the unit. Thanks
