Angry 01 Impala ABS

Does anyone know how to disable the ABS system for this car? I tried to remove the fuse, but that does not allow the car to start. I need a new ABS Control Module, but can't put out $1,000 at this time. I was hoping to drive it without the ABS until I can afford it. Any help would be appreciated.

How do you know if the ABS Control Module is not functioning properly. What are the symptoms? I may have a similar problem.

Actually the dealer ran a diagnostic and told me that was the problem. I'm not too comfortable with the dealer because it took four visits over a period of two weeks for them to find it. The first symptom was the Traction would activate without it being necessary (on and off). Then the car began making grinding noises from the front brake area and now the I get those two symptoms plus all the ABS and Traction Warning lights come on. The dealer told me that it was not dangerous to drive it like this, the only setback is that I don't have ABS. But I really would like to disconnect completely it until I can replace the module.

Did you fix the problem yet? I am having a similar problem. I disagree with the dealer saying that it isn't dangerous though, because that grinding noise is either the transmission anti-slip or the ABS kicking on...and unless your wheels are locked up the ABS coming on will decrease your braking. I'm checking out the wheel speed sensors right now, but hopefully it isn't a problem with the ABS control module. Its also rediculous that Chevy doesn't make those trouble codes display on the radio or console, so we have to pay to have it checked out.

Whats rediculous is that there had to be a lawsuit to keep them from making things impossible to fix anywhere but the dealer with thousands of codes that small shops can't pay to cypher through all the time.

I second that....heres a question...how much do you think GM makes on a single car through it's lifetime??? Consider the cost of the car new, then all the maintance that you have to put into it because i swear cars now days are programmed to break down!!!! And to consider all the problems people seem to be having. The problems seem to be with a lot of components on it. Just a thought.....

Re: 01 Impala ABS

hey ya'll lets start a revolution!

J/K I totally agree that cars now are built to break down easily so that we can keep GM techs or should I say dealer technicians busy and the CEO's pockets fat. *my opinion*

Bigger question would be how much they lose on cars anymore, $1,000-some for each car they build just goes to UAW benifits, Medical etc. And then all the recalls they have to do, new parts we don't pay for. The only part of them that makes the money is the financing department which has people on however many year loans with X-Ammount of intrest. Don't assume they make so much on their cars. Yes I know i'm defending the corporate giant, I just don't agree with some things they do for example the hard to translate engine codes pumped out by the car computer.
