99 grand am gt- delayed shifting

I have a k&n regular air filter in my car and around the same time i installed that i started having problem with my car not wanting to shift when i stomp on the gas, its really delayed and some times it will redline or a little more then shift. Could the air filter be causing that? I have had two different garages look at it and they said all of the fluids are fine, there are no leaks and the overdrive system/computer is working fine and they couldnt find anything wrong. any ideas? i was thinking about getting that new cold air intake box from doctor speed would that help anything?

You may have gotten a lot of oil from the filter on your MAF sensors. I noticed after using a K&N filter for a while, they tend to slowly over time spray their oil inside the intake. Yours might've been over-oiled or something, and gotten it on your MAF sensors. I would reccomend a few things

A ) try unplugging your MAF - it could show you that's the problem

B ) CAREFULLY clean the sensors on the MAF with precision electronic cleaner

C ) Try swapping it out for a MAF for the same car.

The MAF is that silver box that is in the middle of your intake with an arrow on the side indicating air flow direction. It senses your air temperature. There's a plug going into a black box thing that sticks out of the side. Unplug it, and drive it, and see if it makes a difference (your service engine soon light will most likely come on). If it does, then the problem is your MAF. If you want to clean it, you will have to remove it from the intake and very carefully clean the sensors on the mast (you'll see what I'm talking about if you remove it).

Yeh, but you will end up running too rich / too lean in many situations, which could cause hurt your gas mileage, cause shitty performance, and in some situations be potentially dangerous for the engine. If it is the MAF, and cleaning it doesn't fix it, you can find the same MAF at a junkyard for 20-40 $.

Re: 99 grand am gt- delayed shifting

ok, i just disconected it and drove around for a bit, when i stomp on the gas between 60-75mph the rpm's go all the way up to 5,800 and then it will shift, i think it is actually making my car faster because of the delayed shifting, is it? I dont think unplugging that thing helped at all. could it just be the k&n air filter making it do that because its a performance air filter? Whould this problem get better or worse if i bought a stage 2 cold air intake from doctor speed, and u said ur shortend urs or something, whats up with that?

Well if I stomp on my gas around there, the RPM's go all the way to 5800 too. It's because when you're going that fast, the downshift lands it at a lot higher RPMs.

And no, "delayed shifting" will not make it faster. You want it to shift just after the torque peak, and shifting at 5800 is not a good shift. You want it to shift at about 5500 RPM, and land it back at about 4500 - thus keeping it in the power band.

I don't think it's "just your filter". When I use to have a K&N (before my WAI setup), I noticed it changes the power band. So, if by delayed shifting, you mean it's spinning higher then usual before shifting, this would be understandable. The K&N increases your power in higher RPM's a little bit, so your engine will spin a little more into higher RPM's to get the same problem.

About the stage 2 CAI, I don't think it would neccesarilly help or make the "problem" worse - if there is even a problem. I'm not sure quite what your problem is. Maybe you could describe it more for me.

About the CAI off ebay - You could probably find one for cheaper, but it will be a real cold air intake. The stage 2 intake is a warm air intake, like what I have. When I made mine, I actually bought a CAI off of ebay, and then sawed the pipe to turn it into a WAI / shortram setup.
