timing belt change causes more trouble?

3.4L GTP, had timing belt changed. idle is now erratic, but motor seems to run fine at other speeds. and if i rev the motor in Park, the rpms stop climbing after 4000 rpm. Out on the road, motor will rev past the 4000 number. is this related to the timing belt work. shop said that timing was ok. but can you tell if a tooth is off with a timing check? thanks.

Re: timing belt change causes more trouble?

Sound's like you are hitting the factory rev limiter (4,000 RPM) that is programed into the factory PCM or atleast on the 97/03 GP's.

Re: timing belt change causes more trouble?

Yea, my 3.4L GTP has the same factory rev limiter at 4000 in Park. but about the timing belt, im not so sure, wish i could help you on that. I red a real long thread about the 3.4L engine and in it, timing belt replacement and setting the time was all mentioned. Apparently the timing gears at the end of the cam shafts arent fitted on with a key slot like most engines, but they are actually marked with like a paint pen and the marking can and WILL wear off. So if somehow ur timing gears were moved, then it will be extremely hard to fix, and to have a shop do it about $750 dollars. ( i hope this isnt ur problem). Let us know. Hopefully this helps u pin-point the problem.
