What am I missing??

Ok, I'm officially stumped. I'm still detecting a noticeable smell of antifreeze in the engine bay. Just had the upper & lower intake gaskets done, no cracks in plenum, new t-stat (even added a gasket), new 16lb radiator cap. Water pump is fine. System holds pressure to 20 lbs. No detectable leaks in radiator or hoses. No smell internal to car, so I don't think it's the heater core.

What the heck am I missing?? Is it just coming from the overflow bottle?? Am I just paranoid?

Re: What am I missing??

How long ago did you do it? Could it still be "burn off"?

Re: What am I missing??

I was wondering the same thing. Got it back on the 10th but have driven it daily to/from work since. Have put 160 miles on it.

Re: Re: What am I missing??

You would think it would have had time to burn off. But with that 180 stat, and the colder weather???
May want to keep an eye on it, and give it a couple more days.
I hate when stuff doesn't go right.

Re: Re: What am I missing??

Seen Larry was out here. Was hoping he would come up with something. As long as you checked it when you put it togther, and didn't pinch anything. What else could it be? Or it's one of those elf's coming in at night and........... Forget it, it wasn't funny anyhow.

Re: What am I missing??

I climbed all over this thing today, top to bottom. Absolutely no sign of anything leaking. In fact, no sign of any coolant loss. Maybe it is just the residual coolant burning off after I had the intake gaskets done.

If you look closely at the coolant recovery bottle, you'll notice that the cap is vented. Could the smell be coming from there?

Re: What am I missing??

I'm starting to think it's coming from Mark's shorts. You know it is cold up there.
John,
Seeing we all have that same vent hole, wouldn't we or some of us get that same smell? Just wondering.

Sounds like it's going to burn off.
Let's hope.

Re: What am I missing??

Even better today. Starting to relax a little. Didn't think residual antifreeze could take that long to burn off.
