Re: Anybody got an extra transmission for a 97 Grand Prix

Try car-part.com and look at wrecking yards in your area. I found one at 2060 auto parts in Buffalo for $650 with 31K miles. If it is a 3.8 non-sc. Found a 4T65E for a supercharged for $850 in Auburn at Kubis Auto Parts with 1K miles. Hope this helps!

If i may ask, how many miles did you have on your transmission and how was it driven?

The tranny is for my son's Grand Prix, he has over 160,000 miles on the car. I forgot the DTC code that it displays by number, but it has an occasional torque converter slip/stumble and the check engine light comes on.

As you may know, here in NY the car won't pass inspection under these circumstances. I guess the problem is common with this Pontiac/tranny combo and the problem relates to the torque converter....as long as the thing is apart..we may as well install another tranny and converter.

It runs great and the tranny just stumbles occasionally, then the light comes on....nothing to do with emissions..but it won''t pass inspection either.

Here in NY, the check engine light can't be on, you can't have any DTC codes present either. You can't clear the ECM because it won't pass inspection unless the I/M tests are complete.

I understand that he can have no more than (2) "not ready" I/M tests, so he might be able to clear the codes, drive the car in 3rd gear (stay out of overdrive) and try to get the I/M tests completed? W think that the DTC may only appear when it shifts to O/D.

The car runs great and is dependable and he plans on getting rid of it in a few months.. just needs to pass inspection now.

Have you taken the car to a tranny shop? Based on your description you may only need to have a shift solenoid replaced. It also could be the TCC solenoid causing the engine to stumble and give you the code. I wouldn't change the tranny until I took it for a diagnosis somewhere. You could save yourself a lot of money in the long run especially if he intends to trade the car.
