96 jetta can't start

1996 jetta auto Can't start,battery is good.Next to the RPM is a little window,
it shows that it is in drive but the shift handal is in park What's up

Check the shift cable at the trans to be sure the transmission actually is in park. If so, then the multifunction (park/neutral) switch right near the cable connection is bad.
