Yes. That's where the rev limiter is set at while in Nuetral or in park.

Re: '97 Rev Limiter at 4000 RPM?

No problem. They set it there because revving it higher then that while not moving it potentially dangerous for the engine. If you're accelerating, and revving a lot higher then that, the engine can take it, because all that power and vibration it's able to transfer to the tires and road. However, when it's just sitting in one spot, the power is "harnassed" enough I guess you could say - and the potential for damage is much higher.

If you like to rev up lots, getting a reflashed PCM will remove your rev limiter = you can rev as high as you want. Not exactly a good idea though from a engine-safety point.

Re: '97 Rev Limiter at 4000 RPM?

I can't imagine reving a four cylinder past 4grand without a load on it to be very good. Fun maybe, but not healthy. It's kinda like running a car just off the alternator without the battery. The Energy has to go somewhere once you lay off the throttle. There is no real control over the internals of the engine which could potentially cause unwanted wear. Even downshifting is better for your car using engine braking techniques over just reving the snot out of it in neutral, in my opinion, because the engine is still transfering power in a controlled manner. Just my 2 cents.
