94 grand am rev limiter

i have a 94 grand am - 2.3 sohc w/auto trans. It runs ok and i didn't notice a problem with it, but when i took it for pa. emissions it wouldn't rev to the required 2500-2700 rpm. seems to cut out around 1800. i think the rev limiter is supposed to be around 3400 rpm. is the rev limiter built into the computer module? i talked to a few techs at some dealers and they couldnt come up with anything. i had a scanner on it and it didn't show any codes. any ideas?

Re: 94 grand am rev limiter

Welcome to the forum. I don't understand what you mean cause your rev limiter isn't suppose to cut out as such a low RPM. It suppose to be into your redline. Maybe I am misunderstanding something though.

thanks john
thats exactly whats happening - the rev limiter is cutting in at 1800 rpm.
you don't notice anything wrong under normal driving, but if you get on the gas from a standstill, you can hear it cut in right before the 1-2 shift.

Re: 94 grand am rev limiter

Well it must be a ignition problem if its cutting out. Cause the PCM trips and registers RPM based on distrubutor or optical sensor. Good Luck.

Re: 94 grand am rev limiter

I am having the same problem on my 94 GASE w/ 2.3l engine. I got the car from my father in law, because it wouldnt run past idle. I gapped the spark plugs to .030 instead of .035, and it runs good, but still hesitates, and in park, wont rev past about 2500 RPM. Sounds like I am pressing and releasing the gas pedal rapidly. I'm going to try a new MAP sensor.

Re: 94 grand am rev limiter

xkvator, I wish I had some insite for you , But unfortunatly I do not. I saw your home town and just wanted to let you know that there is another guy from western Pa. here with you. I'm in Conway, Beaver county.
I recently started a thread about the Grand Am Forum, there are a lot of knowledgable people here on this forum and they are always willing to help. I'm sure someone will be able to offer some more ideas, but I must admit your problem is going to be a little harder to figure out.
Good luck,
Dan

Re: 94 grand am rev limiter

My DOHC Saturn coupe ('92 SC2 5spd) used to do the exact same thing. Turns out the MAP sensor was gone. It wouldn't read vacuum properly and would cause the engine to start cutting out at 1500-1800 rpm. Pretty much the exact rpm range you just described.
