Re: Installing Gentex Auto Dimming Rear Mirror

If you get the one with the compass and outside temperature readout, be forewarned that you will have to do an excellent job of installing the button on the windshield if it is going to last. The mirror is heavy and will rip the button off the windshield after a while - hitting bumps and such.

Many cars have buttons for their OEM mirrors and these are no problem. Toyotas generally need to have a button installed and it is not easy to get one to stay. Use the absolute minimum amount of glue on the button.

I have no experience with the standard mirror, only the one with the compass and temp readout. The standard mirror may be lighter and not be as big a problem.

no i just got the Regular one that just auto dims, i found the one with the compass and the Temp Useless considering my Car already have the Temp and i'm not going to use the compass. Do you know how much is it to bring it to a place and have it installed?

I was told it will fit the same button, all i have to do is remove the regular mirror and slide this Gentex on, but the thing is that i dont know the wiring, There are 5 wires.
- Solid Black
- Black with White Stripe
- Black With Yellow Stripe
- Black with Green Stripe
-Black with Purple Stripe

FYI- This is a Gentex GNTX-187, I bought this Mirror Used so there is only about 6 inch wiring on it, which means i am going have to extend it, Do you know if Autozone or Stratuss sells the wire?

Re: Installing Gentex Auto Dimming Rear Mirror

There is nothing special about the wires. You can buy multistrand wire anywhere - Radio Shack, auto supply, etc.

The black is the ground. Cover the sensor on the front of the mirror and apply 12 v to the other leads one at a time with black on the other pole of the battery. The wire that causes the mirror to dim (probably the yellow) is the one to wire to ignition-switched 12V off the fuse box. With 12 V applied to the power wire and the black wire grounded (sensor covered), apply 12 V to the other wires. The wire that reverses the dimming of the mirror should be wired to the power for the back-up lights. This wire reverses the mirror darkening when you are backing up. The other wires are probably not functional.

Do you know if my car (04 Camry LE with no Sunroof)comes Pre wired? Im reading some of the forums and some people said their car came prewired, however their cars were not toyota Camrys. I know this car had a option of getting the Auto Dimmer Mirror but when i bought it, it didnt come wiht it, so maybe the hope of it being wired up would be nice.

Re: Installing Gentex Auto Dimming Rear Mirror

The Automatic Dimming Rearview Mirror was optional so it may be prewired.

Re: Installing Gentex Auto Dimming Rear Mirror

Doesn't post #5 adequately describe how to sort this out?
