proper rpm range for 2.2L

I'm just curious. The g/f has an '03 2.2L Eco with the 5-speed manual. We were talking about a good general rpm range for the engine to be in while driving, in whatever gear for the posted speed. My thinking is that the 4-cyl. plant should be a moderate revver so it doesn't lug and sludge. It seems a good general range is between 1K-2.5K in whichever gear before shifting up. For example, I'm saying to her that to shift into 5th at say 30-35 mph doesn't do the engine much good, and doesn't save enough mpg to be worth the lugging.

Whatcha all think from your exper. with the 5-speed and 2.2?

When i drive stick in the the rents car. I usually shift at around 3K RPMs and downshift at around 1.5K RPMs but that is for economy driving. If you at a track.. launch at about 1.5-2K RPMs and shift into the next gear when you get out of the car's power band. Differers for every car but it is usually around 3.5-5.5K RPMs.. so shift out of that gear and whenit goes into the next one the RPMs should still be at 3-3.k RPMs...

ah, okay, so I too conservative on the range then for regular daily-daily driving?

Sticking it in 5th at 30-35 isn't bad for it unless you try to accelerate and it labours (bogs) this can cause a small amount of damge over time but it will save gas! the difference between 4th and 5th at this speed is about 1500 rpm that as actually a big difference in fuel comsump. I have a 2.4 which has a good amount of low-end torque and somtims shit before I hit 2500rpm and it never labours at all. Although If I'm ginving it the beans I'll shift just before redline. Most 4-cyl make peak power right near redline.
