new to vw board, questions 96 Passat vr6

Hi,
I am in the process of buying a 96 vr6 GLX and have a few question and would appreciate any help. The car has 115K everything checks out but no service records, so I guess I have to change the timing belt, hoses & wires look old so probably do a major tuneup and I think the 02 sensor is ng. Can anybody give me a ball park what these items will cost and if these cars are pretty reliable-it's for my son and I want it to be somewhat trouble free.
Thanks for your help.
Eric

VR6 uses a timing chain/tensioner thats located between trans and engine. They normally go bad at 130-150kmiles but CAN last up to 200k. The only way 2 change them is to remove the transmission.

02 sensor from $150-$250.

wires are about $130.

The serpentine belt and tensioner is about a $300 job.
