how do i change a carburetor on an 84' chevy caprice classictink21 01-30-2005, 10:20 PM I have a 1984 Chevy Caprice Station Wagon and I don't know how to change the carburetor. Any ideas? I really need to change it before my long drive. PeteA216 01-30-2005, 11:10 PM You want to replace the entire carburetor? Its cheaper to rebuild, but if you want to replace it its very easy. First, remove the accelerator cable on the driver's side of the carb. There should be a small spring loaded clip holding it in (this is how it is on mine). Remove all black rubber vaccume hoses, taking note of where each was placed. Pull off the two electronic plugs on the front of the carb and the wire to the electric choke. Then, unscrew the fuel return on the back of the carb (metal line). Then, very carefully, not to stip anything, while using another wrench to hold the fuel filter case, unscrew the fuel line on the front of the carb. Fuel will spill out, just be sure not to be smoking. Then, remove the four screws on the base of the carb, and slowly and carefully lift the carburetor off the engine, being sure not to let anything fall into the intake manifold. Replace the gasket if needed. Then when putting the new carb on, be sure everything gets hooked back up, and don't crank down too hard on the fuel line. Just take your time, and be sure to take note of where everything was hooked up to. If you're nervous, use a digital camera to help you by taking pictures of everything. Good luck! tink21 02-01-2005, 02:03 AM Thank you for your help. I couldn't find the info anywhere else. I'm having a friend do this for me because i already have the rebuilt carburater from Autozone. Again, I appreciate this. Thanks. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
