Factory fog lamp switch with non factory fog lamps.

Well, I finally got tired of the original fog light switch I was using from Radio Shack. as it didn't fit with my interior really well. I finally decided to try and wire in a factory fog light switch to my truck that did not have the fog light harness installed as it does with the 98+ models even if it doesn't come with fog lights. Well I have to say it was a resounding sucess and I'm very pleased with it. I had to wire my upper fogs to only be able to be turned on with the lights and go off with highbeams due to the law.
I do have an upgraded harness do to the fact that I have a hidden switch that turns on both sets of fogs, (top 55watt, bottom 100 watt), my low beams (silvania silverstars) and my highs (APC white 125 watts) at the same time to force those morons who refuse to turn off their highbeams after you flash them. I figure that a little bit of retina ghosting will teach them a lesson for the future! :bounce:
But today we will be covering the simple 2 lamp fog light wiring.
Parts Needed:
Fog lamps (Your choice)
GM Switch part # 15953150
4 or 5 wire sealed relay (you can also get specific fog lamp relays with wires attached)

Here is my old switch...Simple radioshack toggle switch.

Here is the Factory Switch.

Here is the back of the new switch..

You will see that Pin 1 is opposite the key.
Wiring is as follows.
Pin-1---12v+ from headlamp
Pin-2 & Pin-5 splice together to go to 85 on relay
Pin-3 Brown on light switch (to light the switch itself with regular lights on)
Pin-4 Ground.
Relay-
85 from Pin 2/5 on switch
30 to Battery
86 to ground
87 to positve on fog lamp
Foglamps.
Splice 12v+ together to 87 on relay
Grounds to frame or relay ground. (I prefer frame)
Here is the finished pic..

Optionally you can replace the lights in the switch with your favorite color LED's. Requirements are as follows
LED-3mm (no bigger) 2500 CMD (or better) with 150 ohm resistors to anodes. I've already ordered mine. The switch itself is cake to take apart. It's how I figured out the pins and that 5.mm are too big
I hope this helps a few people.

I should also mention that the switch runs about 23.00 at the dealer.

Re: Factory fog lamp switch with non factory fog lamps.

rlith,

Correct me if I'm wrong...I'm guessing that pin 2 is the output of the switch and pin 5 is an input for a "lights on" indicator led. That's why they are tied together. I wasn't sure so I didn't put it in the schematic.

Re: Factory fog lamp switch with non factory fog lamps.

I just would like to see where the connection are made to the relay.

Is it a separate relay?

Have you gotten the info to update the schematic? I ask in case it gets looked at in the FAQ section.
