I am looking into a 72 bug, and I was wondering if the high performance rebuild kits that change out the jugs and the pistons along with the valve stems and most other parts will hold up to unleaded gas?
If someone would be so kind as to clue me in on how to make an older bug run on unleaded that would be great.
I have the 23rd anniversary of the beetle book, and it said that after 71 VW started to change the valves in the heads to be more environmentally sound. So we can burn unleaded in 72 bugs and beyond.
I lived in Germany for four years and ran leaded in my 72 over there, just because everyone told me I had to. She lasted my entire stay, so I guess no harm done.
If you're going to change out the pistons and jugs (I'm assuming you're going to bump up the cc's to 1641 or higher), go ahead and get a set of aftermarket heads. Not only will she breathe better, the new heads are set up to run on unleaded gas. And on the plus side, some of the new heads changed the position of the spark plug to get a better burn.
