How high is it reading??? Also, what engine do you have?? Please list when you can. As a rule, if you have a 4.3 6 cylinder (as I do) they run right around 200-210 degrees as normal. If it is higher, most likely a sticking thermostat, dirty coolant system, or low coolant. Check coolant level in radiator and overflow (when engine is cool). Radiator should be full to top and the overflow is marked. If you have someone else put the thermostat in, have them flush the system and put in new anti freeze. Most of the time it is a thermostat problem.

As far as cash, stat runs 8-10 bucks, flush runs anywhere from 40-50 bucks, and labor to put in a stat 25-50 bucks. This is pretty vague but best I can offer. If you do this you might save some money but then you have old coolant to deal with. May want to invest in a Chilton or Haynes manual which can help you do some things yourself. A real good investment.

the info

it runs around 205 but every once in a while it will rise to the max then quikly drop back down. i think its the vortec v6. the coolant was replaced about 4 months ago when the radiator looking thing behind the glove box started to leak, a friend of mine replaced it. the coolant level is where you sead it should be. so from what you sead its probably the thermostat. where is it? my guess is between the engine block and the radiator hose, i kinda want to know before i tear it apart.

Have you had the cooling system flushed and refilled lately or ever at all?

my friend ran cold water through the lines until it came out relatively clear when he replaced the radiator looking thing behind the glove box.
