Rear gate lock inop!

I got a 92 S-10 Blazer where the rear window/tailgate can be opened with the button on the dash or by a key in the gate. The other day i put the key in to open the glass and it would'nt work. Nothing happened. I tried my spare in my wallet because all it is, is the door key that opens the back, and it would'nt work either. Now the only way i can open the gate is by the button inside. I checked out the latch and everything "looks" ok. Do i need to get a new lock......latch.......or...... what do you think?

Re: Rear gate lock inop!

Could be a bad lock latch or a rod that came off.
Pull the tail gate cover panel and see whats not working.

Re: Rear gate lock inop!

I had a problem with the tailgate on my 91 s-10 once and it was one of the rods had fallen out of the clip. In order to remove the interior panel to get to the mechanism you have to open the tailgate. I did this by using several pieces of wire coat hanger to go fishing for the end of the rod that connects to the latch. This has a small hole in the end of it. If you make a small hook in the end of the wire you can pull on the rod. You have to pull both of them together to get the tailgate to open. If only one of them is detached, pull on that one while turning the key. After you get it open remove the inside panel and don't put it back on untill you are sure the problem is fixed. I bought new clips from a locksmith that does car locks. They are about 3/4 " long and 1/2" wide made of spring steel that slide over the end of the rod and have a hole in them that lines up with the hole in the rod. They just snap onto the pin on the latch mechanism.
