95 taco drinks lots of oil...

have a problem w/ my 95 taco drinking oil. no oil spots on ground, but after a full oil change w/ filter, will need to add oil within a month or so, and it means it's gotten to the point of being almost dry... I know I need to check the oil level more regularly due to this problem...any ideas. I did notice plug#2 coming out covered w/ oil. Oh yeah, doesn't smoke so where's all the oil going???

I also have an injen intake. now my engine lights on. any ideas...

Are you saying that you are using roughly 5 quarts of oil in 1 month?

when I check my dipstick after a month or so, there's barely anything there, but if I was to drain the oil, there'd probably be about a quart or so...

First suggestion, check and add oil as necessary at every gas fillup, unless you are trying to destroy your oil drinking engine. It will not get better by neglecting it.

You don't say how many miles are on the engine. If it were mine I would run a dry compression test on a warm engine. Record the figures, the readings should not vary more than around 15% between cylinders. Inject about a spoonfull of oil into each spark plug hole and run a wet compression check. Record the readings. If the wet reading is considerably higher you probably have worn out rings/cylinders. I would also run a cylinder leakdown test. If any cylinder has excessive leakage you can listen at the exhaust, intake and in the crancase for signs of blowby/leakage.

Engine light, if you still have the stock air intake system install it back on the engine and see if you still have the light.

If oil isn't leaking it must be going out the exhaust, you don't say how many miles you drive to use several quarts of oil. It's not always easy to see exhaust smoke. It's best to have someone follow you and check.

Probably a broken oil ring on the #2 cyl.You should drive behind it sometime to see just how much blue smoke is coming out, or take it to DEQ and run a smog check, I bet it won't pass. So it probably has more then 150K miles? Most likely it will need an engine rebiuild or replacement used engine. Some of the other posts above with checking the compression are excellent ideas. A compression check will tell you alot, either the rings are blown or the valves.
