oiled air filter ?

I run synthetic oil and a reusable oiled air filter on my 01 double cab. I have seen some complaints on other vehicles that the oiled air filter can foul the MAF sensor with oil from the filter passing thru. I am wondering if this was just vehicle specific or a concern in general when using an oiled air filter. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: oiled air filter ?

This is a general problem with oiled filters. It is not a problem if you are careful not to over-oil the filter element. More is not better in this case. The oil will wick to dry spots on the element and you only need to add enough to cover most of the filter sparingly.

This can also be a problem if you use an oil that is not meant to be used as a filter wetter. Use only the oil supplied by the filter manufacturer.

I like the TRD filter (cotton element) which is oil-wetted. One thing I have found with this element is that the cleaner supplied with the cleaning/re-oiling kit does not do a perfect job of removing all the old dust and oil. I clean these elements first with the TRD detergent, rinse it off, and then soak the element in dilute dishwashing detergent and water. This solution gets really dirty when I do that, so I figure I did more cleaning with the added detergent/water soak. Then I let the filter element dry at room temperature (cotton shrinks) for a couple of days before I re-oil it and use it.
