Question possesed and squeeky electric fan

The electric radiator fan in my 99 Jeep Cherokee turns on and off a lot and quickly, 5 seconds on 5 seconds off. Now I assume that this is an auxillary fan as the motor has another fan driven by the serpantine belt. But I would assume that the electric fan would only turn on when the temp is hot enough, but it is turning on right after first starting the vehicle and I live in Iowa and its only 15 degrees outside. Does anyone know if this is normal or if there is something wrong. Also it squeeks really bad until it has been running for a while, I think maybe because it is cold. Is there anythiing I can do for it?

Re: possesed and squeeky electric fan

the a/c should run in the winter now and then (10 minutes each month) and people would not turn it on until the next summer and then wonder why there a/c wouldn't work, so the manufactors have the a/c cycle on and off when you have your DEFROST on so it will keep the a/c compressor and everything else in good shape. Also , everytime the a/c compressor comes on, the electric fan will run until the a/c or defrost is shut off. I use the defrost to clear the windows then turn it to heat, then the a/c and electric fan won;'t be coming on all the time. This could be what is happening with you. If it is, its normal.
