Brakes Slicing Rotors!?!?!?

Hey Guys,

I was helping a friend of mine change brake pads on his Prelude and when we took off the tires we noticed something very damn scary...

The top plate on the brake pad from the driver side was broken from the pad itself and has SLICED a groove close to 1/16" deep on his rotor. When we took the passenger side tire off we also noticed that the plate on this pad had broken loose although it had not quite reached the rotor yet.

Has anyone experienced this problem...seem to me this would be faulty equipment on the manufacture of the pad. The old pads were purchased from NTB @ 6 mnths ago.

How should he handle this problem with the store that put them on? What about the manufacturer?

I have pictures of the slice and will try to post them after this message.

Thanks in Advance!

Were the pads installed by NTB? If so, take the car back.

I was actually checking mine out the other day, and my read passenger side has this, a 1/16th inch deep circle all around the rotor. Will it keep digging into it? what should i do? the other ones on my car dont have any such lines let alone grooves.

Whether or not it will continue to dig depends upon a few things.

Are the pads original or have they been replaced? If replaced, by whom? How long ago? Did they have the rotors turned? What condition are the pads in? Are you hearing any grinding or scraping noises from that corner?

Grinding or scraping noises when i break? I do not think so, but it is of decent depth, and has no rust in it whatso ever, so i take it it is still digging into it. Should i take a look at the pads? or turn my rotors?

I'll post my pictures if I can figure out how.

The brakes were installed by NTB, we are takin the car to a different NTB today though. I have an old friend who works there and it going to hlep us out.

I'll be back with updates.

This problems seemed to have occured b/c the prelude has slotted rotors and my friend used a low quality brake pad...the heat from the metallic pad and the slotted rotors was to much for the pad it self and the adhesive that holds the shim and pad together broke down... shouldn't the guys at NTB know about this possibility???

KX2000GTP - Yes, he should. Doen't mean he will though.

Phoenix69 - Definitely get in there and check it out before the damage gets any worse!

Turns out that the pads were correct, they were just low quality and that caused the adhesive to melt away. My friend at NTB hooked us up though. Master Cylinder was out, he replaced it for about half the cost as well as giving us new pads...he installed Wagner pads and said something about how the composition of the pads is specific to the cars.

All in all it was definetley (sp?) an educational experience, but one that I would rather not have to endure :-)

Thanks for all your help.

I agree. There's two systems on a car that you absolutely cannot afford to skimp on.......steering and brakes. Either can be deadly if they fail.

Is this a case of pennies kill?
Boy, down here it doesn't matter if you stop. It's a case of which old fart fell a sleep at the wheel.

Now that you bring that up, with the respect to steering and rack N pinion how hard is it to change the rack N pinion system...?

I've been having a small problem with PS fluid leaking. so i went to my local auto parts store and purchased some Lucas PS stop leak. since I began using the Lucas fluid it doesn't seem to be leaking much more however, i still have a whine when I'm driving occasionally. The whine doesn't go away after warmup and it seems to change pitch with different gears, which has caused me to believe that maybe it's something with the tranny.

Is the whine PS or something with the tranny? 00 GTP 65K
