65 skylark starter problems

I have a 65 skylark with a 75 Lasabre 455 in it. Recently it started making a ticking noise %50 of the time when I went to start it up. My first reaction was to change the starter, which I did.

I still get the ticking noise, so I checked the battery to make sure it was good, which it is. The ticking still happens.

I then took a pair of jumpers and connected them directly to the starter and the frame and hooked them up to my wife's car that was running to see if it would jump, which it didnt.

I shave my head or I would pull my hair out.

Anyone our there have any ideas for me to try? I admit my mechanical ability is mediocre at best, so treat me like I'm 5.

Thanks fellas.

Re: 65 skylark starter problems

Check to make sure the Battery negative cable is clean and not rusted or dirty. Not the battery end the other end. It should be connected to the engine. Just follow the cable from the battery to where it is grounded. Take the bolt off and clean it till it shines put it back on and try it. This was a common problem with the older vehicles.

Re: 65 skylark starter problems

There are several reasons this could happen. I have had the ground cable burn out on me 2 times. You may try replacing that and see if it helps. The relay could be bad. Not sure on your car, but on mopars it is on the fender. Try jumping it and see if it starts.
You should be able to follow small wire back up from the starter.
