i know it varys from car to car, but is there a site where it shows 1/4 mile times and the hp the car is running, im just curious to find out what a 1600hp skyline would do and an 800hp silvia would do or an equivilant like a supra or integra, cause from what i have read on these forums thats basicly the highest anyone has every gotton these cars upto, but i wouldnt have a clue what they run in the 1/4 mile.

You need more than just HP to figure 1/4 mile times, how about adding the weight of the car. What you will end up with is the potential of the car with driver error and track condition NOT figure in. Also, it does not figure turbo lag for the cars mentioned so times could be off.

HP is only one small part in drag racing...

I have seen skylines with up to 200HP more than another and still be slower due to the fact that it is not setup correctly.

You have temp.. temp affects turbo cars differently than Na traction, gearing frontal crosssection, drag driver, tires torque to overcome a headwind.. not just hp.. barametric pressure track level ..ie sea vs 1 mile (denver)

and wehter its a properly set up ato can mean awesome consistant lanches that leave a 6 speed with 150 more hp playing catch-up and likely not winning

flat torque curve rather than a peaky one.. man Hp is but one of many variable.. i've personally seeen auto 440 rwhp cars identical beat 550 hp 6 speeds with the wroong gears and tires and driver...

ever watch the 'Hemi"commercial where the dragster pulls alongside the tuck.. and blows its tires off while the truck strongly pulls away.. thnk of that next time some on talks about hp beiing king

its balance that wins.. hell anyone can build a 5.0 with 500-600 hp but will it runna great time.. sean hylands 400hp Gt ran a miserable 13.3 comparad to the factory cobr's 390 hp 13 flat or 12.89.... balance

look at the95 saleen s351 495hp and 500 ftlbs of torque ran a 12.7...stock Ls1 canrun 13 flat with 325 hp

Weight is the Main determining factor in that calculation, and under some variables these factors are very close. The Westons Performance Malibu runs 8.51 @ 162mph at a weight of 3550lbs. The engine dynoed at almost very near that number of 1,200 hp.

So just to be extreme
lets use 2 car

car a weigh 3000 lbs and has 400 hp
car b weigh 3000lbs and has 400 hp

car a is a 6 speed m f body with the normal 3.42 rearend and standard platary gear ratio

car b is a f body with an Automatic and 3.42 gears.. it also has a 3500 stall and 2.5 str and its platary gear have been altered by Art Carr

with equal niito dr's of the same width a the identicalreaction time

i'd say the properly prepped car b would easily take upt .8 lees time to finish the 1/4 mile

oh and car a doesn't have lightweight ceterlines and skinny but car b hasan am and subwoofer system

( rotational mass)

also some convinced car a to put some goody no funtional scoops and lighweight bodycladding moving it .33 drag coefficient to a whooping.37

sorry only in a vacum does the weight and hp time become true.. and were is this 400hp peaking at as compared to its peak tq.. the car can be set up differently.. we've all heard the coined term .. whats happening below the curve

Hence why i've seen 600hp supra only pull 12.2.. when a Stock Z28 has run 12.8 with a mere 305 hp

both caras weigh about the same both are in the same aerodynMIC .33 AREA.. SO WHATSUP

THEIR ARE PLENTY OF VARIABLE IN ENGINEERING CLASS WE MADE AN OLD POS MALIBU SHED 1/2 A SECOND WITH OUT TOUCHING THE MOTOR TITRE GEAR OR TRANNY JUST THE SUSPENSION..

THIS I A BAD ? ONE THAT WOULD TAKE A LONG TIME TO FULLY COMPREHEND

WHEN I WAS AN INFANT IN ENGINEERING I USED THE HP AD WEIGH CALCULATOR FOR A MUSTANG I OWNED SOME MINOR TWEEKS OTHER WISE STOCK IN MOST ASPECT. IT DID HOWEVER HVE 295 RWHP THE CALCULATOR SAID IT SHOULD RUN A LOW 12 WHEN I FACT IT BARELY RAN A 13 FLAT 13.18 TO BE EXACT

YES YOU NEED A CERTAIN HP TO WEIGHT RATIO FOR CERTAIN GENERAL TIMES .. BUT THEY CAN FLUX EASILY UPTO A SECOND A 1/2 WITH OTHER VARIABLES

LEAST OF WHICH NOT EVEN MENTIONED "DRIVER' TRACK CONDITIONS

on factory, or close to factory cars, power to weight is critical...

yes, you could change your gearing and what not, but we're talking factory here.

if you have a 3000lb car with 400hp, simply dropping weight will make it faster.

yeah, if you've got two cars with 400hp/3000lb, and different gearing and what not, it's going to be a different outcome.

we are all pretty much aware of it.

i know that if you put 4.11 gears in something that's got factory 3.72s, it's going to be a lot quicker, though all you've changed is the gears.

for basic starting points, and as far as 90% of enthusiasts are concerned, the power to weight issue is the major one.

most people don't go around doing the tranny swaps/upgrades and gear changes on their cars.

they do the simpler (ie. cheaper) stuff first, like add hp and drop weight.

your point is valid, though so is the power to weight point.

also, keep in mind that hp/weight calculators are only so accurate, as they do not have variables for gearing and weather conditions.

they are by no means gospel...

Hrey Fly

or Jon T

my good buddy.. what you have to say.. like my dissertation on the variable.. and not being fiated like most on hp and weight

how hp does you prelude have and how much is its "race weight"

we can punch in the number and find out just how far off they are

or are you folowwing me like Spyke

your on myiggnore list buddy.. so yu can't razz me.. hey pal don't be jealous thatyou can only have one car while i have a small collection thats about to grow soon 2 new babies should be on thei way once they get in

Hey Fly let try it again.. a uhaul shortbed empty say 3500lbs with 350hp
4speed automatic.. planetaries set up for strong 1rst and 2nd and crruising 3rd and 4th\

Cd off the chart like .50

Stock Firehawk 350 hp race weight 3500lbs even (est) 4 speed auto w overdrive

drag .33

Now in any universe except fantasyland dos anyone think that these vehicles would come within 4 second of each other

in a Vacume maybe close depending on gear ratios plantary and final drive.

i give it a possible 1.2 second variance in a Vacume

you getting it Jon T

How'd your prelude do with a the Hp and weight calculator? close or not

you wouldn't agree with me even if it were true.. sadly that make you very unman like

wtf?

did i bring my car into this at all? nope.

i understand what you're saying in regards to gearing.

however, in the real world, where people don't change final drives as much as they change intakes, the power/weight thing is still pretty true.

why am i being attacked, when i never once brought my car up?

you also picked apples and oranges to compare. anyone can see that.

if you took two f-birds and then, keeping the power the same, dropped weight in one, it'd be faster. that's without doing anything else.

is that too hard to understand?

i have said 3 times that cd and gearing are important, but the weight thing CANNOT be over looked. sorry.

harsh?

i never said anything harsh.

if you learn how to read, my posts are strictly about the topic at hand, not cutting down other members of the board.
