Dilemma!!!

Ok, I am a chevy man. First car was a 1991 Camaro (305), second vehicle was a 97 S-10, and my third and current vehicle is a 2000 Blazer. Now I work at an importer for BMW/Mercedes parts. Things like rims, lights, exhaust, suspension type parts. Well today I got an offer for a job at the local FORD dealership as a parts person. I will be making more $$ but do I really want to work for the enemy? Being a Chevy forum, what do you guys/gals think? Would you work at a FORD dealership for a little more money or say "screw it, Ford sucks" ?

Re: Dilemma!!!

I am a die hard Chevy/GM fan, but alas, a look at my prior work history finds that I once worked at a Ford parts counter. It was actually a warehouse,(no cars for sale,) that dealt with the local Ford/Mercury?Lincoln dealers, as well as the general public. I didn't mind it, it was a job, and the pay was all right.

One thing I have learned over the years is that EVERYONE makes their junk, even Chevy had a few. I love my Olds 98, GMC S15, an I love my F150 too. basically I dont like Ford cars but their trucks seem pretty good. It certainly has treated me right for over 10years with only 1 battery and 2 starters for repairs.

What I think you really need to ask yourself is if you may be unhappy in this new job because its Ford and whether you will use your Ford prejudice to put it to the customers. (give wrong parts, bad mouth Ford...) If either question is yes then keep the job you have before you give yourself a bad rep and find employment difficult thereafter. Beleive it or not these shops do talk to each other and if Joe gets a bad rep at one he will have a hard time getting hired by another.

Just my 2cents since your are alrady working for the enemy, but hey, at least its BMW and not ricers...LOL

Re: Dilemma!!!

Well, I Love Chevy's, but if you really enjoy just working on cars no matter what they are. Id say go for it. If working on cars is really what you love to do I would take the job. I can say I hate imports, but I dont mind working on imports, as long as I can get my hands drity and wrenching on something.

Re: Dilemma!!!

Go for it, man. BUT you make damn sure that your Blazer is always tuned and clean. Don't ever discuss any problems it has with the Ford guys. When they talk about their problems, tell them they should have bought a Chevy.

Re: Dilemma!!!

With all of todays mergers going on, You would be suprised a what I see in Fords stamping plant parking lot in Walton Hills. I looks to me like Alot of folks drive what they like and work where the money is. Take the job and be professional. Just smile at the GM comments you here 'cause you know better. Remember, laugh and the world laughs with you, but cry and you cry alone.

I agree. When GM had a parts plant here in Syracuse, (Fisher Guide,) up until 1991 all you saw in the parking lot was GM vehicles of all makes and models. But if you drove about 4 miles down the road to the Chrysler transmission plant ( New Process Gear) they drove cars made by the BIG 3 and the import manufacturers. The union didn't like that so for awhile they made those that drove non-Chrysler corporation cars park in a separate parking lot the farthest from the plant entrance. It didn't deter the employees from owning what they like. After a few years the plant became New Venture Gear and also made components for GM transmissions. Now they went back to the New Process Gear name and are owned by the Magna Company (out of Canada I believe,) and the employees still own what they want, and the parking restrictions are gone.

Good luck with your new job, dude! Keep us updated on problems we need to watch out for in Fords, ha ha. I'm a Chevy fan, but not die hard. I think I would have taken the job, so keep up the good work!
