Rims, tires etc
Hi all. First post here...
I have had several Toyota trucks in the past, but never a Tacoma, until today. I picked up a nice little '96 standard cab with the 2.7 and 5 speed, it runs and drives like new.
It's got the stock steel wheels on it (15X6?) and 235/75 street tires. It's going to see some use off road and in the snow, and it deserves a better look than what it's got too! To that end, I'm looking at getting some wheels and tires ASAP. I can get a full set of late model 16" tacoma alloy wheels for $200.00 and was figuring on 265/70 tires. That's about a 30.6" tire, up from around 28.5". I have looked at the codes on the door panel and it looks this truck has 3.58 gears for the small tires. Anyone have any experience with this jump in tire size? I live in the foothills in CA and the truck cruised up here with ease today, I don't want to lose that power and I don't want it to doggy when I'm towing my motorcycle trailer. Any input is appreciated!
As a side note, I'm looking at other wheel options and there isn't much to choose from in the 15X7 or 16X7 stock sizes. If I go to an 8" wheel where do I need to be in offset and backspacing for no rub at stock hight?
Thanks in advance!
Doug
