how hard is it to install, lets say someone who knows virtually nothing about the engine vs. master mechanic.

I don't know about a 3rd gen, but on 4th gen Camaro's cold air intake is one of the easest thing you can do. Even if you have no idea how an engine works, it's still pretty easy. And the kit will come with instructions.
