crap in the gas line?

Have a 75 conv. that sat for atleast 31/2 years before I bought it. It's in pretty rough shape, but the engine seems good. have just taken her for an extended drive (all of about 10 miles) and she isn't right. suddenly, she keeps cutting off. When you start her, she cranks, be when you give her gas, she dies. If you let her run for about a minute after she dies (that clicking sound) she'll crank and run for about 2 blocks. Then dies again. Could this be rust and build up in the gas tank from sitting so long? Does the whole gas tank and gas line need replacing or can I clean them out? I'm new to this whole car rebuild thing.

Thanks for any input.

Re: crap in the gas line?

i do not own a beetle myself hope to own one soon,
but imy part of the woods(africa)we see that quite often, have you thought of changing the plugs and filter(Fuel)? and then the giving that tank a clean wash with some petrol. check the duct from the filler cap some rust does build in there and drop into the tank. and most importantly take apart the carburatter with a fairly skilled person and wash out the dirt sucked from the tank..she will run as good as new.
hope this helps free to post again

Re: crap in the gas line?

FI makes it alot more complicated. You can try the fuel filter, it should be up under the front by the fuel pump. You might want to take it to someone familiar with these systems.
