Question O2 sensors

i have a 1998.5 svt contour, the check engine light is on. i checked it out and the computer said both of o2 sensors after the cat's need to be replaced. i know there about 75 bucks a peice. is it really worth changing them, i notice no difference in my fuel economy. if i should any suggestions to make the reapir go quicker.

About the only thing you can do to make this swap go quicker to have the right tools as they are a bit tedious to get out. Whats the code exactly? Lean, rich, slow responding, etc?

actually it may not be a problem but i had the same problem and it wasnt bad for the first 5 thousand miles and then after that the car started sputtering on the start and i had a real rough time shifting out of first gear so i think it would probly be better to replace it now to avoid the hassle later on

I think its unlikely the downstream O2 sensors are bad unless you have alot of mileage on them, say 100,000 miles or more. If the codes you got were a P0420 & P0430 the likely cause would be aged or broken-up catalytic converters, a common problem on V6 contours. If you have less than 80,000 miles on the car you could have them replaced for free at the dealership because they are covered under the emissions warranty
