Hasegawa Subaru Impreza WRX Sport WagonJay! 03-09-2002, 04:29 PM Well, I wanted a WRX, too, but I gotta be different. :what: Last weekend when I was in San Diego with family, I went hunting for model shops. I found one that sounded good, but turned out to be crap (mostly R/C cars). I was dissapointed, but as I pulled out of that shopping center, I saw there was a Hobby Shack in the next mini-mall over. I know of Hobby Shack (a.k.a Hobby People) already as they are a Southern California franchise. They carry all kinds of hobby stuff, including model kits. So I want and looked around a bit, but their model car selection was slim... :( But at the end of the aisle, there was this: <dead pic><dead pic> It was marked at $20, which is about right for Japanese kits around here. But I've been tight with money lately, and I waffled for a while before deciding to get it. But I did, and when the clerk rang it up, he said, "$10.83." I just smiled and handed him my card. ;) Not quite as cool as getting a Ferrari kit for pennies on the dollar (Guiddy!), but I'm okay with 50% off! :D It's the wagon version of the kit Phil made into his STi ver. III (see gallery). The WRX version was never sold in America, but the body style should look familiar, as it is roughly the same as the Subaru Outback Sport. I've started on it just a bit... mostly pre-priming and fixing mold lines. I snaped one of the b-pillars while sanding it. :angryfire But it'll be okay... I want to decide on a color, so I can go ahead and spray it, and leave it a while to cure. Any suggestions? I think I'm going to sand off the side markers and experiment with making clear ones... Oh, and as Phil said before, the wheels totally suck!!! They are SOOOOOO tiny! I'll be using the 15 spokes from the Revell ITR kit, minus the chrome. I measured them; the stock wheels are like 16" and the new ones are like 19". :coolguy: I also want to make a little tow hitch for it... for an concept I had a while back. I want the wagon to pull a flatbed trailer with a rally-prepped (i.e. WRC kit slightly de-tuned) car, a WRX of course, with decals on the race car like it's a private team or something... I always imagined it with a Legacy wagon, though, but I'll make do. :D tazdev 03-09-2002, 04:51 PM why do you keep on buying them if you don't have time to make them? Jay! 03-09-2002, 05:05 PM Originally posted by tazdev why do you keep on buying them if you don't have time to make them? :bloated: Because I can't follow my own rules... :( flyonthewall 03-09-2002, 05:36 PM I snaped one of the b-pillars while sanding it. But it'll be okay... ...tut, tut, tut:rolleyes: Thats a great subject jay, your idea with the rally car in tow is a good one - i hope u find the time for it. No desire to turn it into a rice burner then? Jay! 03-09-2002, 05:45 PM Originally posted by flyonthewall No desire to turn it into a rice burner then? The giant wheels will be plenty... and I may swap out the tiny twin tailpipes for a larger single. For simplicity's sake, you know? :D flyonthewall 03-09-2002, 06:12 PM talking of car and trailer combos i saw a couple of interesting ones here; http://acmeclub.topcities.com/PhotoLinks.htm I particularly liked this one; http://acmeclub.topcities.com/Nnl2000/L_TruckBoat.jpg and then there is http://acmeclub.topcities.com/Burmingham2/L_PTCruisers.jpg There are a number of cool models in these galleries but look out for some quite bad ones too like; http://acmeclub.topcities.com/Bob_Shelton/L_Abomination.jpg I must have been gut-laughing for about half an hour after seeing that one... and http://public.fotki.com/grdeyed/mccm_birmingham/dscn2627.html hahhahaahahahahahah..... primera man 03-09-2002, 11:19 PM Lets get a finished model from you eh !!! :finger: :finger: J/K....Looks sweet mate, i never knew they done a wagon model :( There are plenty of them here in NZ, mostly in blue, white or red. My choice would be red with gold rims :) :) tazdev 03-09-2002, 11:25 PM saw that model in my local model shop. but they wouldn't let me open it to see the quality of it:( hiro 03-10-2002, 01:20 AM That's a sweet wagon, even sweeter for $10.83!! I remember Aoshima makes a really cool Legacy wagon too.. Jay do you have the trailer already? Who makes a trailer? Jay! 03-10-2002, 03:30 PM Originally posted by hiro That's a sweet wagon, even sweeter for $10.83!! I remember Aoshima makes a really cool Legacy wagon too.. Jay do you have the trailer already? Who makes a trailer? I'd seen the Leagcy a few places, mainly at Legends, but it was always $30+, and I couldn't bring myself to pay that much... :( (I need a broke smiley... :( ) Well, I'm sorta waiting to see that I can figure out about the Subaru trailer hitch first. I assume that it would be connected to the frame rails, but they're so far apart, and the gas tank seems to be in the way... I'd really like to find one in person to gawk at a bit. Then, if that part worked out, I was just going to scratch build the trailer out of the plastic and/or brass beams they sell at the hobby shops... hiro 03-10-2002, 04:08 PM Here's the installation instructions :) http://subaruparts.com/install/2002itrailer.pdf Jay! 03-10-2002, 05:35 PM Originally posted by hiro Here's the installation instructions :) http://subaruparts.com/install/2002itrailer.pdf WOW!! That's perfect! Thanks!! :D :D :D pkw1 03-10-2002, 08:17 PM Hey Jay, hope you can have fun with your WRX wagen.. I surely had a hell of too much fun with my sedan. The wheels really suck huh? :D the only thing i can tell you is to be careful when fitting on other rims on this kit. you may have to do A LOT to make them fit well, since the wheel wells are not deep enough to hold anything wider then those donut wheels the kit comes with. but have fun thou, once you're done, it'll be all worth it ;) Jay! 03-10-2002, 08:29 PM Originally posted by pkw1 the only thing i can tell you is to be careful when fitting on other rims on this kit. you may have to do A LOT to make them fit well, since the wheel wells are not deep enough to hold anything wider then those donut wheels the kit comes with.Yeah, I found that out real quick. The ITR rims are an okay width, but the spare tires I have to fit are wider than the rims. So I guess I'll cut the inside part of the tires off... If I take the time to round the edges out it should look okay... pkw1 03-11-2002, 02:39 AM oh man.. shaving bits off tires? that sounds like a real pain.. and there's a good chance of really messing up the thread patterns too. good like thou, I'll really like to see how other people tackle this wheel problem on Hasegawa kits Jay! 03-16-2002, 03:48 PM Guess what I did wrong! :p I filled the wrong pair of windshield wiper holes! :bloated::bloated::bloated: I poked them back out and will fill the others after a bit of clean-up. I'm finding lots of sink-holes in the suspension parts... :( Jay! 03-17-2002, 10:03 PM Still looking for a good color for it. I only got one suggestion:Originally posted by primera man There are plenty of them here in NZ, mostly in blue, white or red. My choice would be red with gold rims :) :) But I have too many red cars... I'm kinda thinking of these two: Dark Green Pearl & Slate Gray Metallic two-tone: http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/239103acya2.jpg Rio Red: http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/506702hide_p2.jpg What do you think? :D hiro 03-17-2002, 10:13 PM I think the 2 tone is an Outback Sport, not sure what are the exterior differences except 2 tone color though. Jay! 03-17-2002, 10:16 PM Originally posted by hiro I think the 2 tone is an Outback Sport, not sure what are the exterior differences except 2 tone color though. No, it's from Japan. :) So they must have them like that, too. The red one is Canadian. But whatever to the JDM/USDM nonsense; I just want a nice color! :) Which do you like? :) hiro 03-17-2002, 11:30 PM I think red looks good :) http://autospeed.com/site/autospeed/images/0077_03lo.jpg pkw1 03-18-2002, 04:30 AM I like the 2 tone... :D Guiddy 03-18-2002, 04:38 AM I would go for blue or white! I have a soft spot for white Imprezas! Green should never be seen, Red is too common and never suited Imprezas IMO! tazdev 03-18-2002, 04:56 AM White is not commonly seen on the wagons, it is more common on the sedans. I like the green pearl but not in two tone (that just looks wrong) imo pkw1 03-23-2002, 02:24 PM Jay, so how's the bandwagon comming along??:D Jay! 03-23-2002, 02:36 PM Originally posted by pkw1 Jay, so how's the bandwagon comming along??:D LOL! :p On the good side, most of the chassis and intertior are done. I have the Subaru paint code(s) for my color choice and I'm going to track them down at an auto paint shop near me. So other than that, I'm in wheel hell!!! :angryfire I cut the tyres like I said, and the inner side walls are a bit choppy, but more or less ok... The tread pattern just looks a-symmetrical. No biggie. The wheels themselves are the pain. Hasegawa's wheels are "male" and the Revell wheels are "female." So, I thought I could use a bit of plastic dowel (or toothpick, as is standard of wheel mods! :p) in between the female Revell wheel and the female Hasegawa hubs. Unfortunately, that makes the wheels stick out to much. I guess the Hasegawa hubs are made to fit right up against the inner backsides of the wheels. So, I have to cut the little female nub off of the insides of the Revell wheels, but most of my tools are too big to get in there... :( :o So what I'm going to try is to use successivly larger drill bits to open up the hole until I've taken away all the wall around it. Then just stick the dowel stricht to the wheel backside, but really, I'll probably have to glue the wheels onto the hubs to keep them there... Jay! 03-23-2002, 07:58 PM Oh, yeah... the other thing I've been working on for it are the clear side markers... I want to make sure I can do them before I sand them off the body before painting. I've been trying to cast them in model cement, but I keep getting too many bubbles. I thought I finally found a good use for the tube glue. Guess not; I need to go buy a thinner brand. daggerlee 03-23-2002, 10:21 PM I believe Testors Model Masters line has a clear glue used for scratchbuilding canopies, should serve for your purpose pkw1 03-24-2002, 02:49 AM getting good wheels on there are a real pain aren't they? I don't even know if I want to EVER built my other hasegawa kits.. I have like 4 more.... Lan Evos. Jay! 03-24-2002, 02:55 AM Originally posted by pkw1 I don't even know if I want to EVER built my other hasegawa kits.. I have like 4 more.... Lan Evos. I have two others; one's not in my sig yet... Both those kits will keep their stock wheels! JDMTUNING 03-24-2002, 04:58 PM It HAS to look better than my stuff. I have the modeling skills of a 9 year old. I dont even wanna post my stuf here cuz its sooo bad. Jay! 03-24-2002, 11:40 PM Wheel update: I've taken all the extra wheel plastic that I can afford and they still stick out too much. :( Next stop is filing down the faces of the hubs... Not a lot of room left, but I only need about 1/16" more... hiro 03-25-2002, 12:05 AM How about some over fenders? :D Jay! 04-14-2002, 12:34 AM Simple update: Wheels will be bastardized with mock-up disk brakes, but will be glued in place; they won't roll... :( But it will be lowered a bit. :) No dice on the trailer hitch for this one. I can't quite swing it on such a small car. Back to using a Legacy wagon, if I can find one... On a good note, I found a cool flat-bed trailer to use, but it's die-cast and $25!! :o May I just say that body work is a bitch? I took off the sidemarkers, then I decided to fill the door molding groove down the sides. Arrrgh!!! I just primed is to check for bumps or gaps for the fourth time, and now it's finally okay... Whew... Maybe someday I'll get around to painting it... Jay! 05-02-2002, 07:06 PM :bloated: It's hard to mask circles! At least without that bladed compass thingy. I ended up printing a bunch of different sized circles, finding which was the right size, then laying Tamiya masking tape over them and cutting them out with a hobby knife. Then they peeled right off and I lined them up. :) It's getting it's green paint coats right now. :D I should have found a way to mask off more of the interior, but oh well.. :( More updates soon... :D patate 05-02-2002, 08:50 PM tell me this why do you need a roling model you play with it :p pkw1 05-03-2002, 01:56 AM get it done and lets get some pictures up :D endlesskev86 05-27-2002, 05:00 PM man that kit for about $10...nice~:D u should use putty and give that wagon a body-kit....more hardcore!!:sun: spray the body white and tint the windows..... as for the wheel....use ADVAN;) Jay! 05-28-2002, 04:03 PM :zx11pisse :newburn: :angryfire   :zx11pisse :angryfire :newburn: MOTHER FAWKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :zx11pisse :newburn:  :angryfire  :newburn: :angryfire :zx11pisse :angryfire  :zx11pisse :newburn: I was about 85% done with polishing the body when I went through to the primer in one corner of the hood. I figured it was no problem; I'd just mask off the hood, respray and start over, right? I was masking the edges, and I trimmed a piece of tape too short, and when I pulled it off, ALL the paint on the pillar came with it!!! :zx11pisse :newburn: :angryfire   :zx11pisse :angryfire :newburn: :zx11pisse :newburn:  :angryfire  :newburn: :angryfire :zx11pisse :angryfire  :zx11pisse :newburn: The body is in the CSC bucket. On a good note, I got the wheels worked out. I ended up using slices of a pen tube for wheel spacers. :) I'm out of school after this week, so I'll have more time for modeling. WOO HOO! :D mhpspeed 05-28-2002, 05:16 PM OH SHIT!!! i have had that happen to me and that sucks. but i out mine in a bucket of thinner and i couldnt find it again. oh well, but what color was it before i dont remeber i was thinking it would probably look good with the same color as ur wrx. and the trailor thing if ur gonna do that there is that race team one that revell makes but it might not be the same size as the car and it mgith be too big and look funny on the car. Those are just some of my suggestions Jay! 05-28-2002, 06:56 PM Originally posted by mhpspeed and the trailor thing if ur gonna do that there is that race team one that revell makes but it might not be the same size as the car and it mgith be too big and look funny on the car. It's cool. I axed the idea for this car, but I'm going to get a Legacy wagon for it instead. I already got the trailer and rally Impreza. The trailer looks just like this, except in 1/24 scale. It's die-cast and it's made by a company called Georgia Marketing and Promotions... http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/588592trailer.jpg It actually came with tow hitches, so when I decide what car to tow with, I just have to glue it on... ;) mhpspeed 05-28-2002, 07:39 PM thats cool, I love that idea and might have to use it later. Jay! 12-09-2002, 04:21 AM The wagon is Gold and Green again. :) :p My circle masks didn't come out nearly as well as I remember doing them the first time. :( Oh, well... good enough for now... So... I got a wee bit of overspray, green over gold, where the masking tape buckled, and came back up after I burnished it down... :o How to remove Duplicolor from Duplicolor? :( After that... about a dozen clear coats. ;) daggerlee 12-09-2002, 07:20 AM You could sand off the overspray with some 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper. IF it's tiny overspray, you can probably sand all of it off without affecting the bottom layer too much.. The sanding will be covered up by the clear coat anyway. :) Jay! 12-13-2002, 12:59 AM I've gotten most of the overspray sanded off, and a light touch will get the rest. :) Now I can't seem to find the side markers I cast for it! ARRRGGHH! ales 12-13-2002, 04:01 AM Jay, do you want me to buy you a box to keep the small parts in? (with a bigger compartment for windshields) :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Take some pics, will you? :p Alex Jonno 12-13-2002, 04:59 AM LOL, you need a safe to keep model parts in! :D Yeah, pics? Jay! 12-13-2002, 01:45 PM No kidding! :( No camera, either.... Jay! 02-02-2003, 04:55 PM Window frames completed sucessfully this time! :) I used the very last of my TS-29 Semi-gloss black can on it. God bless Tamiya for canning that stuff! :sun: Next: foiling light-backs. ;) Then: Attach wheels and final details. Still no camera. :o ales 02-03-2003, 02:21 AM Go Jay!!!
