These are the specs for a 1200watt sony amp I just bought. I do not understand ohms? I used to just hook up whatever I had, but I want to do this job right. 500watts rms x 1 at 4ohms, does that mean only a single sub at 500watts? Any info would be appreciated, I have installed many systems before but never really paid attention to the speakers and amp being a good match, and now that I'm trying to I dont understand what it all means :eek7:

if i were you, id get one good 12 in a sealed box.... if you bridge 2 speakers and run them both to your amp with two seperate wires, the "ohm" load of each speaker will double, and it will take twice as much "ohm" load to drive them. example, 2 4ohm speakers hooked up independantly to the amp will make the amp run 2ohm. this will make your amp really hot. and might make it go into standby mode. but its the best way to get power out of it.

Hmmm, I bought it thinking watts were the only thing to look at. I was really wanting 2 twelves but I dont want to risk damaging the amp. Oh well, I heard a guy with one memphis twelve outdo two JL audio 15's the other day, so one may be more than enough :). Is the maximum I can push is 500watts to one speaker? I dont know how many watts I actually have to see whats the most ideal sub for my power.

and thanks for the help! I dont want to fry my amp:))

Yeah you'll want a sub rated at 500 or more RMS usually 1000 or more max. don't match the input with the max for the sub or you'll fuck it! :boink:
