Sounds like your thermostat is trying to go bad, and the vent seems stuck open.

Not sure ont he vent, but the thermostat is an easy fix and less than $10.00

Ithink your right about the thermostat the temp. needle moves all over and the heat seems to come and go. I turned on only the defrost and the cold air @ my feet stopped as login suggested. THank you for your help.

Your temp gauge will also fluctuate if you have low coolant, or air trapped in your cooling system. If your thermostat stuck open the car will never get hot, if your thermostat is stuck closed your car will overheat. To test your thermostat, drop it in a pot of boiling water (don't use your wife's good pots, I guarantee you'll get in trouble), it should slowy begin to creep open, until it reaches the stop.
