I hve a 2002 ford explorer that will not engage. I took to the dealer and they said that it was the contorler. Does anyone know where the controler is and can I get one OEM and replace it myself?

It is located behind the glove box. Open the glove box and on both sides push the sides of the glove box towards each other and this will allow the box to drop lower. Don't forget to disconnect battery first. Remove 2 electrical connectors, and remove 2 screws. Lift the controller module. Yes to getting one from dealer and yes to replacing it yourself. Let us know how you did on this repair.

I just had the same problem diagnosed from my dealer and have a bunch of questions for you. How much was the part? Was it easily done yourself? Does the aftermarket make one? Is it rebuildable? Any idea if there was a recall or service bulletin on this issue. It has happened at 89 000 km of mostly highway driving and it seems odd that it would be gone already. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks

I called the dealer and ask how much the controller was. Theyu quoted me 480.00. This was more than the initial estimate to replace it. So I took it back and had them replace it. I could not find any aftermarket controller so I did not have any choice.

The controller is actually a module. I don't know if the aftermarket makes one, but you can replace it yourself as it is a dumb module and requires no programming.

This was a problem dealing with select early build 02 models, ive seen several of these with very unique characteristics, such as engaging in 4wd on its own, dependant on ambient temp., and also flashing 4wd lights for no apparent reason while flagging no trouble codes, good news is that it was corrected.

I have a early 2002 that had the exact symptoms as you described at 47,000 mi. Will Ford cover this as a known problem (in the early ones)?

If you have an extended service plan and its covered then they will, but if you just have a base warranty(3 yr./36k) then no, its not covered.
