Street racing signals and etiquette147GTA 01-03-2005, 06:53 AM Where I live, in Singapore, street racing is pretty risky. It's a small island with not many long roads and no remote roads. You could drive from the East coast to the West coast in 45 minutes, and from N to S in 25. There are a lot of speed cameras and the cops are really cracking down now. As a result, there isn't much street racing. SO we don't have many signals or ways of communicating from racer to racer. Maybe you can list what you do here, also talk about etiquette. Here is what I follow here. Feel free to edit/change or add what you can to make it most accurate how you see it. Thanks! SIGNALS 1. Honk horn while driving next to another guy at the same speed - Begin race 2. Flash high beams at car after race - Goodbye or Thanks 3. Flash hazards after race - Same as 2, but could mean "I beat you" ETIQUETTE 1. Don't endanger anyone 2. Don't speed by going 100 while the other guy is doing 20 to get his attention. Musashi3000GT 01-03-2005, 08:32 AM well the honk your horn thing is only when you have already made it clear that you intend to race. Example: a guy pulls along side and just drives side by side, you look over and he jestures with his finger pointing forward, you nod o.k.. also its not one honk, its usually three honks and you go on the third. the flashing your lights from behind is not usually a "thank you" when you see a car up ahead that you wish to race you get up behind them and flash your lights, it sort of means "GO". but thats more for like a highway chase or and outrun race. the point is not like drag racing side by side to see who can pull away faster. its like telling the guy "go but if I pass you then you loose". I usually do this with kids who drive less powerfull car then me so it would not be fair to go side by side, I flash my lights, they get a head start and I follow and try to pass. the blinkers ate to let someone behind you know you want to race. its like saying "hey you, get over here next to me I want to race" or if you already raced then the person in front puts them on to let the other guy know its over and he wins. for example: on the high way I race some kid and after 5 miles he still cant pass me so I put on the blinkers and that says "ok, enough, I win" mostly we dont have a street language per say, in the states at least we always pre meditate the race, in other word we talk and agree where and when and under what conditions. on the road if you run into someone they will usually rev or lower thier window and ask if you want to race, on the highway if a guy pulls up along side and then punches it you can follow or just sit back and let them go. racers sort of know who and where to race, its like instinct I guess. clawhammer 01-03-2005, 09:07 AM 2. Don't speed by going 100 while the other guy is doing 20 to get his attention. That's the definition of a ricer flyby 147GTA 01-03-2005, 10:12 AM Yeah, ricer flyby, that's cool. I love it, even here, the Chinese dudes talk about riced-out cars and describe them as 'rice' also. So funny. By the way, I'm American, I only live here. qr25sentra 01-03-2005, 10:38 AM i thought the other person has to be finished racing then a ricer flyby can be done by the person who lost. xXxRocker5150 01-03-2005, 10:51 AM ^ HAHA, so true... i3o2Matt 01-03-2005, 10:54 AM not necessarily...it could just be the person was extremely late for something...or...in a lil more realistic point of view...the person was being an asshole and was trying to show you how fast their car was compared to yours. it all depends on how you look at it. Polygon 01-03-2005, 11:16 AM SIGNALS 1. Honk horn while driving next to another guy at the same speed - Begin race 2. Flash high beams at car after race - Goodbye or Thanks 3. Man, there is almost no such thing out here in Utah. Most of the time I get no warning when someone wants to race. I usually look for someone that keep inching up at a light, revving their engine, or at least honking their horn. Nope, the light turns green and they just go. After the race there is usually no pleasantries. They usually do a rice flyby, give you the bird, or tell you that they're going to kick your ass. Rarely have I come across someone that will give me some warning or someone where we both give a thumbs up after a race. I wonder if you’ve been getting similar treatment CivRacer? qr25sentra 01-03-2005, 12:56 PM once i was in my g/fs eclipse rs (auto) and some crazy ass red neck was tailgating me and then came around in the other lane, so i punched it and about 5 seconds later i was already at 45!!! lmao yes this car is very slow probably like 18 sec car. so after punchin it from 30 to 45 when it only downshifted into 3rd the guy gets next to me and starts flippin out..he says " u wanna try me boy!! u dont kno who yer fuckin' with" then i just start crackin up and then my g/f was like hes gonna fuckin pull a gun out and shoot us..and then i was like " on green im goin for it" and i pull ahead and hit my hazards..then i stop and he does a ricer fly by..the guy was like 50 something dampachi 01-03-2005, 01:49 PM I take hazards as meaning "I win" but alot of people around here misuse it as "I'm done racing". tha_new_guy 01-03-2005, 02:01 PM I take hazards as meaning "I win" but alot of people around here misuse it as "I'm done racing". I dunno, something about flashinghazrds really bothers me. I'm like...who are you?!? Really, I think brake lights are a good indicator of the status of a race, so if someone pulls on me to three cars, and his brakelights go on, the race is done. The main thing i think is speed-matching. If someone pulls up next to you and matches your speed, then a race can ensue (with some form of flagging). dampachi 01-03-2005, 02:32 PM Well..sometimes races are so neck and neck I just have to slow down before I end up going 100+mph. On the street I try to keep it under 100mph..but sometimes I may get sucked into the moment and end up exceeding that speed. and by sometimes I mean pretty much everytime....sigh. Someones been playing alil too much Underground 2. Musashi3000GT 01-03-2005, 03:12 PM Someones been playing alil too much Underground 2. Oh please bro, someone goes and writes it down like it feels to him and you gotta go and make me look like a jackass by comparing me to Underground 2? WTH? you think If he asked me 4 months ago I wouldnt of written it down the same way? its not my fault the Underground programers made it that way. I'm sure they asked or reasearched it and found out thats preaty much how it worked! .......................and for the record I got it from Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero. REPRESENT WANGAN RACING, BOOYAAH! i'm such a :loser: street_racer_00 01-03-2005, 03:46 PM etiquette+street racing=mutually exclusive terms. qr25sentra 01-03-2005, 04:18 PM i dont like how those street races "outrun races" in need for speed 2 are. who the hell would do that in real life..yea go ahead and do 160 against traffic see how long u last lol.. that game is alright i havent played it in like over a month. nissanfanatic 01-03-2005, 06:10 PM NFS1 and 2=teh ghey :gay: GT3=the sex(even though its all on tracks) As for racing, I just do whatever. Not really much of a question of what to do. Someone pulls up, looks at you, stages and punches it, you punch it. Simple as that. The person who ends up in fron wins. I usually don't stop until the other person stops if I'm in front. Highway races are much more fun. I don't usually rev at anyone I don't know because the couple of times I did, I felt like a ricer. hahahahaha CamaroSSBoy346 01-03-2005, 06:19 PM well, here in virginia, and pennsylvania, no one uses flashers etc. Nor a honk. Most street races here happen by chance. If 2 fairly quick cars happen to pull up next to eachother a light, a race is almost sure to happen. youngvr4 01-03-2005, 06:29 PM there has been times were i wanted to get someone's attention and got in front of them and put on my hazzards. that pisses them off because i'm basically saying i won already. it never fails when i've done that CivRacer95 01-03-2005, 07:19 PM Man, there is almost no such thing out here in Utah. Damn straight I have. Nothing at all here. No respect towards anyone. Most often at lights, when someone wants to race, I get the bird, and then the dude asks, "Yo, you wanna race or sumthin?" Fucking goons. In another scenario, you casually drive by, about 2 secs later, they flyby you giving you the bird, hit their hazards, and then shout, "Man your car is so slow." Finally you race them at the next light, and they don't even go, so when you slow down, they fly by you and give you the bird againm and signal their hazards. :disappoin I'd say Utah is full of dumbasses. But every now and then you can run into the actual descent racer, who nows how shit should go down. You know, follows all etiquette and signals. Although, it's all too rare to find around mine and Poly's area. I'm sure Neutrino may even have the same situation as Poly and I. Late... qr25sentra 01-03-2005, 08:07 PM or u can be like some dumbasses down here and start yellin and sayin " u think u can take me?" and then punch it when the other person isnt ready and shut down right before ur about to pass them. TreeFrog 01-03-2005, 10:41 PM up here in Erie, PA and around cleveland we use the same kinda of stuff. on the high way if you see a car you want to race you pull up in the passing lane and match speed. wait for him to at least look over then foor it to see if he can keep up. in these situations its not really a win or lose its a lets have some fun and see what you can do, or how far you are willing to go. flashers are used to signify the end of the race, basicly the person up front says i'm done, so if you pass me it doesn't mean you won. but like i said on the highway its not really a win or lose, any car can go 120 down the highway. i've had guys take off in front of me, passed them, blinked hazzards. slow down to regular speed. then they've come up and given me a thumbs up. and i wave. thats cool etiquette IMHO. on the street at lights its more or less a light to light race that i've been in. you rev your engine, and he looks at you and revs back, this signifiys a race. then its mostly off the line and untill the next light. first person to get to the next light wins. at the next light you may wave or honk etc. kinda like gg in online gaming. most people are pretty cool. its not really wining or losing. i've lost soooo many times in my old accord EX-R, but it was sooo fun. just having people smoke me and give thumbs up is a good feeling. 147GTA 01-03-2005, 10:57 PM Well here there's nothing, as I said in my first post. I guess all you do here is pull up next to a car on the highway and match his speed, then nail it and see what he does. But to be fair, I floor it then let off to give him a chance to catch up. Or, sometimes, we just have cars going hella fast passing everyone. When that happens to me I'm sure to race them, but I don't have as much appetite for death (balls/stupidity) as others so in heavy traffic I try to chill. But just 20 minutes ago I was at a light with a WRX and a Silvia (250hp Nissan). The Nissan had a very illegal exhaust, it sounded like a tractor and had no muffler. Race stickers everywhere and a stupid huge wing. I floored it and they didn't even race. WTF? Kind of weak scene here. nissanfanatic 01-04-2005, 07:36 PM Here I have no scene. PT cruisers with wings, saturns with flame paint jobs, fart cans, oh and V8s. The V8s around here just talk shit because the have a V8. Nothing more. Kinda gives the real V8 tuners a bad name. I feel for them. Only thing I have raced is a a grand am, CRX, and a B16 civic. And that was before the turbo. At least they weren't douche bags. TreeFrog 01-04-2005, 09:00 PM there is not a scene here either in Erie, PA. we have a little group going of turbo dsm's, but besides that its just a bunch of civics with fart cans and stickers. i've seen very few cars that were really fast, its mostly all show, but they don't even look good. stupid NOS stickers and such. i have seen a sentra SE-R spec V that was done up really nice once. i just like racing awsome cars, cause win or lose it's so much fun. and most people with the awsome cars are cool about it too. I did race a dodge viper down in columbus once. that was the best race of my life! i mean just the fact of a viper reving me at a light makes me feel good. oh and yeah i smoked him good.... CassiesMan 01-05-2005, 01:18 AM Here, the signals are a little more subdued. For example, if you pull up at a light, and think the guy next to you will race, then creep up a bit. If he creeps, then ya know he'll race. If he doesn't, then you'll just have to hope he doesn't punch it. From a roll, its a bit harder. I've only had a few times when we honked down...most of the time, you just pace, and jump it once or twice to let him know your there. Sometimes, you'll get lucky, and he'll acknowledge and you'll honk down, and sometimes, when you jump he'll go too and you have a race. I've only used my emergency flashers once or twice in seriousness, and thats when the other guy just wouldn't give up. When I race with friends, we have the person who is behind flash his highbeams to signal he's done racing. We do this incase the person who is behind thinks they can come from behind. I've been in plenty of races where I'm pulling on the person in the lead, and he lets off before I can pull up on him, so we've always let the looser signal the loss. MOPARmania 01-06-2005, 05:36 PM Well, it seems to me that less and less people are street racing these days... atleast in houston. We used to have literally THOUSANDS of people that would gather sometimes down a long ass street. Usually business parks where there is a long straight street with large parkinglots on both sides. People would FILL both sides of the street. This was only like 4 years ago. I just don't see the number of racers there used to be... Anyone else notice this??? CassiesMan 01-06-2005, 11:39 PM Its actually picked up. People are leaving the Bay Area and comming up to the Big F Dub (Ft. Worth). Yeah, I used to have a few Houston street racing vids, and me and my bud were gonna head down, but never got around to it. Sounds to bad that its slowing up. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
