Testing an Old Radio

Hi, I'm looking for advice on how to test an old radio I got at auction. It's an early 60s Chevy Wonderbar radio. Can I just hook up speakers and a battery, or do I need some sort of resistor between the battery and the radio? Any help or references to good sources would be appreciated.
