Question 98 Explorer XLT Transmission Shudder

I have a 98 explorer xlt that developed a shudder at 50k. Flushed the torque converter and changed the fluid. Shudder has come back at 60k. Anyone know what's next. New torque converter, new trans, new car?

Re: Explorer Trans Shudder

Second gen explorers are known for transmission problems with the valve bodies and torque converters. If you have it rebuilt I would suggest maybe a heavy duty rebuild(heavy duty clutch packs etc.) and maybe a shift kit to firm up shifts. Before you do anything are there any codes? Check engine light? You may want to have the computer read to see if any codes have been stored because it could be something like a sensor gone bad. Good Luck and keep us posted.

There were no codes stored. Is it best to have the dealership install or seek a reputable trans shop? Also, what should I expect to spend? Thanx for your reply!

Re: Explorer Trans Shudder

If you are planning to install it yourself, buy a rebuilt from Ford. It comes with a 36K/36Month warranty. Don't forget to replace the torque convertor, especially since the trans is already out. If you are sending it out for repair, I suspect that reputable trans shop would be cheaper than dealerships. Cost would depend on labor rates in your state/city.
