Ok I need some help from some Jeep people. My girlfriend has a 1993 Grand Cheroke she drove it to the store and when she went to leave it wouldn't start. It would turn over just fine but it wouldn't start. The next day I went and started it. It ran rough at first, like it had been flooded or was missing. I reved it up a couple of times and it was fine. I put new plugs, plug wires, and a fuel filter on it and everything seemed to be fine. The next moring I started it and it started fine and ran fine. Well low and behold SHE drove it again, shut it off and when she came out of the store it wouldn't start. OK, here is what I have checked...It has spark. I checked for fuel at the check valve on the fuel rail on the drivers side. When I pushed it down only air came out. When we cranked it over no fuel came out. I also can't hear the fuel pump running when we first turn it over. I have a strong belief that it is the fuel pump but want to make sure that there isn't anything else it could be before I spend $240 for a new fuel pump, and it possibly not solve the problem. Some additional info is that she most always runs it to "E" before putting gas in it and the vehicle has 150k on it. Any advice or help on experience of replacing a fuel pump would help. try the fuel pump relay first, confirm there is power going to the fuel pump before you replace it.

Women are a big reason fuel pumps fail. I dont know how many vechiles Ive worked on where a woman brings the car and its on empty not enough gas to do Diagnostics. Running the Vechile on empty is extremely bad for the fuel pump. The pump uses the gas to cool it. Never should be below a 1/4 tank. You really have to hook a guage to the fuel rail and check the pressure. From what you said it seems that your pump is bad. You can find one cheaper than 240 Try Auto Zone around 100.

Well here is what I have done since I have posted this message. I replaced the releay, since it was a cheap part to try. This morning I went out, turned the key on and could hear the relay kick on and could hear the fuel pump turn on. It started and I let in run for 15-20 minutes, sut it off and started it again. After starting it, letting it run for about 5 min and repeating a couple of times the last time I tried it was like it wasn't getting fuel. It ran rough, died, and then wouldn't start. I let it sit for about an hour or so, hooked up a fuel pressure guage and turned they key on. The psi was about 10psi. So I tried starting it and it started. The pressure was reading about 36psi. I turned it off, blead the pressure and started it up again. I ran like it was starving for fuel and the pressure read 0psi and it died. I checked the voltage at the connector to the fuel pump and everything seems to be ok. According to the Haynes manual, their next step/suggestion is to replace the fuel pump. I am going to do this tomorrow and I will report the results hoping this is the problem. I will admit, until yesterday I am guilty for doing it too and did not know that running a vehicle with an electronic fuel pump below 1/4 of a tank was that bad for it. I guess after 150k miles its done. I do have to give the designers/manufacturer credit for making it last this long. O'Reiley's has a complete fuel pump assembly for $215.

If you refer to the "haynes " manual I believe it says to run a seperate 12 volt connection to the fuel pump, to test. There is this crazy thing with electronics if the break they are broken . get it ,good.
