I have a 1996 s-10 4-wheel drive blazer. I started noticing shifting problems with it it seemed like it was taking extremely long time to shift when taking off from a dead stop. Then I started hearing a knocking sound when coming to a complete stop and sometimes when taking off from a dead stop. It is not every single time but i'd say about fifty to seventy five percent of the time I hear this knocking sound. I had one transmission shop check it out and they said it was definitely the tranny and I talked to another tranny shop on the phone and they said the tranny shouldn't make a knocking sound. Is anyone as so kind to give me a suggestion on this problem. thank you very much.

It sounds kinda like a problem i had with my 97 Blazer. The first question i have is your SES light on when this happens? if so get it scanned. Autozone will do this for free. The Codes I got were:
P0758 solenoid B,
P0753 Solenoid A,
P0785 Shift timing solenoid,
P0740 Torque converter clutch,
P1860 Transfer case contact plate D.

I too was told it was the tranny but after some research i came to the conclusion it was the ignition switch (a common problem on the 97's and other models too). The problem is carbon buildup on the electrical contacts suppling power to different functions of the vehicle. I didn't experince the knocking but who knows it may be related also
mine has been working fine since i fixed the switch

just had my 96 blazer serviced. I had the full service done inc.uding flushing the tranny, the radiator. They also did the front and rear differential and the transfer case. when they drained the front differential they had a bunch of whit thck fluid come out of it. Can somebody please help me out and tell me what this means or has someone ever had the same thing

Hopefully they put fresh oil in. What you describe is what happens when you have water in the fluid and over time, it gets turned into a thick white sludge. Not good at all. Good thing you had it taken care of. Drain/flush/refill your differentials both front and rear at the same time when it says to do so in your book, and you will be okay.

It is that or someone put that Lucas oil crap in your differential.

yeah they did put fresh oil in it. I took it to an oil can henry's to have all this done because the manager is a friend of mine, so I trust him. I don't know if that was what was causing my knocking or not but it has gone away and the thing seems to shift great. My only problem now is my mpg. I am only getting between the neibhorhood of 13-15 mpg. I know with the two wheel drive 96 blazer I had several years ago I was getting like 19-21 mpg in the city. I do have off road tires on this one and it is 4-wheel drive but even when I bought the thing in december of 2003 I was getting like 18-19 mpg with it. I did by a new fuel filter last night and it didn't look as easy as I thought it was going to be so I didn't try to tackle it right then. Any other suggestions. Supposedly right before we bought the seller had a full tune-up on it. But then again they could have just been saying that. thanks again for all the help

You are assuming too much.

ALWAYS assume nothing has been done to your vehicle when you buy it and do a full tuneup on your own.

This will include the following:

Plugs
Wires
Cap and Rotor
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
PCV Valve

Never assume it was all done, you are just asking for trouble and confusion.

Who knows what their idea of a "full" tuneup is, could be nothing but a quick check over and a oil change.

Sounds like you need to do one.
