96 Cavalier Trans remains in park until drive is selected

When in reverse or neutral, the trans remains in park, once it is moved to drive, it works fine until it is put back in neutral any ideas?

The cable might need to be adjusted that runs from the sifter to the tranny to select what position ( drive) you are in... Get your self a Hanyes repair manual from a local autoparts store and it gives you an extremly easy break down on how to do it... g'luck.
