hi everyone. just looking to solve a couple problems on a recently aquired beater. its an 86 cavy, 2.0, auto.
1)it stalls when it is put in gear, but only when its been driven for awhile and is hot, i would think this is the torque converter lock up solenoid right?
2)there is a weird noise coming from the front end, like a woop woop woop woop, and it gets faster as i accelerate, any ideas?
3)the engine ticks, sounds like lifters, again gets faster as i accelerate
4)my windshield defrost has very very little air coming out, and both that and my vent put out cold air, but the heater blows hot?

any help would be greatly appreciated

1. Yes The TCC is the primary suspect. Also clean the IAC valve.
2. Sounds like a slightly warped rotor. New ones cost $20
3. These cars are known for valve noise. Easy to adjust, it just won't stay adjusted.
4. your baffle door is stuck. it is next to the heater core under the dash.

ok first of all it was the TCC...runs fine now. Second i think you're right about the rotor.
Now I am just wondering how i go about making the adjustments to eliminate the valve noise. Also where exactly is the baffle door??

Valve noise on these cars is somewhat normal. You can tighten the rocker arms a little and that will help. Just don't over do it. As for the baffle door. I believe it is right next to the heater core. Under the dash in the very center, next to the fire wall.

To fix the TCC problem, do I just replace the whole torque converter, or is it something seperate?

The repair more complex than that. You must remove tha valve body cover on the side of the tranny. This means you must remove the drivers side axle. The part is about $50 but because it is an '86 I would not worry about it. This will not hurt the car in any way. At most you can lose a little gas mileage. I have never noticed the MPG loss on mine.
