The Lights flashing when the button is pressed generally means that you are trying to switch at invalid times. Can't remember the specifics. but to switch from 2 high to 4 high, you must be in park, or in neutral running under 15 mph (I think). Also, to switch from 4high to 4 low, must be in park, or neutral nearly sitting still. I haven't noticed any problems switching back to 2 high as long as it is in park, or neutral at a decent speed.

My 2 high light would also come on and off on occasion, but I think is it a faulty bulb rather than an indication of the 4x4 system. My light no longer lights up at all...

hope that helps

Re: 4x4 PROBLEMS SOMETIMES WONT WORK

A couple of things I did with my 97 was I found the relay behind the glove box that controls my 4WD and I re-seated them that solved my problem for about a year then I recently took it in for repair and they found the large electrical connector to the firewall was loose. It is held in with a bolt and they turned it only about a turn and a half, but it seems to have solved my 4WD problems.

My 93 Blazer had the exact same problem...turned out to be the encoder. Hope this helps By the way you can switch from 2Hi to 4Hi in any gear and while in motion. To go into 4Lo you must be stopped and in neutral.

now when you say behind the glove box you mean in in the glove box or take of the back peice in the glove box and in there?????? oh and when just driving down the road and the 2 high lite goes off, none of the buttons do anything when you press them, the only way they attempt to work is when the car is in N.......then i get both 4 high and low to flash 3 times, and sometimes both come on lit and other times stay off

need more ideas thanks guys

Re: 4x4 PROBLEMS SOMETIMES WONT WORK

Like I said mine was doing EXACTLY the same thing...right to the T. When the encoder goes bad the computer has no idea what position the transmission is in and cannot determine when to engage the transfer case. That is why your lights are blinking.
