Unhappy Is my alternator belt broke ???

I was driving my car (1997 G.P. Gt) a little while ago and all the sudden my battery light came on, my power steering quit working, my lights went dim, my ABS light came on and it started to overheat.
Can anyone tell me if my alternator belt broke. I'm no mechanic, but I have paid attention over the years to my husband when he's talked about things going wrong on vehicles. Unfortunately, he's a truck driver and he just left town right before this happened. I hate to call and tell him, he dont take bad news well when he's out on the road. Ha-Ha.
So can someone give me some advise Pleeese!!!!!
Thanks,

Re: is my alternator belt broke ???

Sure sounds like it, pop the hood and look at the passenger side of the motor - you should see a few round pulleys, thats were the belt should be. (or was)

Re: is my alternator belt broke ???

If the symptoms are as you describe then the belt certainly broke. Don't drive the car since it will overheat again and you will ruin the engine or at a minimum blow a head gasket. The belt will cost between $20 and $40 depending on where you buy it and will cost a few dollars to get it put on, if you don't do it yourself. A blown head gasket can run more than $1000 to fix.

Smile :) :)

Thanks so much for the info.... I was afraid it was the belt. I'm going to go out and take a look as soon as it gets daylight outside. Since you guys think its the belt too, I'm going to call the automotive store and tell them I need the and act like I know exactly what I'm talking about . Thanks again for the help. Happy New Year !!!

Hello,
I just replaced my alt belt last night. The belt diagram is on the left side of the passenger side strut. But look at autozone.com and enter vehicle inf. Once you do that look at specs. It shows belt installation. Belt runs about 12 bucks.
