Hey, after looking through several threads, I thought it'd be a good idea to ask you people what you think about the speakers in my Cavalier.

I want to get the two in front and two in back replaced because they always crackle at higher volumes; I was wondering, what are the sizes of the speakers, and also would I just have to cut the old speakers out and splice/solder the new ones in with the + and - wires? That's what I thought I'd have to do, but I thought this would be the best place to start. (As you can tell I have no idea what I'm doing. Anything would be helpful.)

I'm not sure if the 89 and 93's are different in speakers, but my front speakers in my 93 are 3 1/2 inch. I replaced them a week after i bought the car. Their easy to take out, but hard to put new ones in, hehe. As far as the rear speakers, 6x9's. I replaced those too with JVC CS-XV6930's. Infinity makes them, just renamed to JVC. Their 240watts, and their great.

Alright, I tried getting a couple 3.5" kicker DX35's but they were too deep to stick in the space between the dash and windshield... but as for the 6x9's, if I would buy better ones, would I get more bass, or is it just limited by the car's amplifier?

Depends on what kind of speakers you buy.

Yeah 3.5s upfront under the grilles on top the dash. Pop those out with a flathead screw driver. undo the 2 screws per speaker, you'll need to cut strip and join connector onto the wires for the new speakers observing polarity. stick the new ones in Rockford Fosgate FRC4203 (about $60) Will do good in there. 2-way 3.5s with a great frequency response. The rear. Well this is extremely easy to remove the old ones. The old 6x9s are under the rear shelf, open the trunk look underneath and you will see them, you just, unclip the bracket that they sit on and remove them. The same thing with the wires need to done for new ones and then install the new in the reverse of how you took out the old ones.
if you want to keep wih Rockford like the fronts then the FRC4369s are great and about $120. Although you can still get a great pair of these for less then $100. Some X-plods are Pioneers are good. Personally I prefer the sonys although some people knock these but I have never come accross anyone who actually has then that is pissed with 'em not that that can be said for Pioneer. I have had to return two sets of 6x9s in a row that were pioneer as one set , only one woofer worked and the other, the mid, tweet plate was loose!! Your call though.

Yea. If you want more power, get a new deck. I got a Sony CDX-F7705x, and it sounds great. It's 52w x4. Right now with my JVC's in the back, I'm getting great sound, and bass. But, I'm probably gonna stick an amp in there, since there 240w and their only getting 52. hehe. And my front ones I got, I'm not sure what they are... They looked pretty nice when I got them, their 2 way's, and it took forever to get them in. Alot of twisting, pulling, bending, etc. Well, actually, it was the drivers side one that took forever. Because the insturment panel there, etc. The passenger side was no problem, old one slid out, new one slid right back in. I'm not sure how many watts they are, since they dont say. I'm eventually going to replace them with the Rockfords, because I can't listen to my music that loud without hearing them rattle.

And just to let you know, If you buy new 6x9's, you might have to do a little modding to the part the speaker sits in. Since mine had huge magnets on them, i had to bend back a few pieces, and i had to take off the piece that hooks into the top part to hold it up. I had to bend that to make it longer, then put it back in. It didn't take long, but it worked. Now I gotta work on the rattles comming from around the car, hehe.
