1989 Shelby Daytona

hi, im new here so dont rape me to hard - thx :o

anyway

my gf currently has a 89 daytona shelby w/ a 5 spd tranny. i believe its the 2.2 turbo but im not quite sure. it has ~82,500 miles..and VERY good physical/mechanical shape.

i havent really looked under the hood so the questions im asking are prolly commmon sense if one would look.

i was thinking about maybe buying the car off of her when she goes to sell it then upgrade it/modify it. right now its blue w/o tinted windows and i was throwing around ideas... painting it black with 20% tint all the way around with some nice wheels... now to go along with the looks - power.

what turbo is this car running?
how much hp/tq is it putting out?
what are some good pages to look at for performance parts?

any other info would be appreciated.

thanks and sorry bout the length

Your car is the exact same as mine. You have the 2.2L I4 with a Garrett T03 stage 2 turbo intercooled. Stock that car does 174HP and 210 ft/lbs of torque. Stock 0-60 of about 6.7 seconds. There are a hell of a lot of mods you can do to your car to get it running under 10 seconds in the 1/4 if you want. Hell you can run over 25 pounds of boost on the engine and turbo as is with a few mods. I say GO FOR IT! You found one with a killer setup.

If you need any info just let me know.

thx for the replies - but i have a few more questions/comments.

1: is there a way to up the boost on the stock turbo b/c right now it seems its only running on.. ~5psi

2: i looked at her car earlier today and i couldnt see an intercooler....

3: what are some good performance sites for this engine

4: her boost seems to kick in right around 3k and it accelerates very quickly.. but anything lower than that, its sloooooow

1: You should be able to drive up the boost to about 15PSI before the engine will cut out, though it can take a lot more than that. The engine should be running between 12 and 14 PSI definietly not five. Any performance shop should be able to drive the boost up as well as the fuel mixture so that you aren't running lean. They will also be able to take care of the pesky limiter.

2: Look right next to the battery and the water resovoiur. There should be something that looks like a small radiator to the left. That is the intercooler.

3: The best I have found is Forward Motion.

4: That is about normal. There are tricks that any performance shop can do to reduce the turbo lag.

If you have any more questions just ask.

i have no clue if the stock pressure gauge sucks or its reading wrong.. but it seems at peak performance - the guage is only reading ~5(on the gauge it goes 0-5-10-15 i believe) and i have not been able to get it to read any higher..

exactly HOW do you/performance shop/mechanic or whatever up the boost?

should i just go get a boost controller ?

thanks for all these answers.. im trying to learn quick.

she is only putting 87 octane(lowest grade) of gas in it right now.. i asked her the next time to put 91 in it and see if that helps.. but i doubt it would(atleast with the boost)

and if you are running 12-14.. wouldnt that throw you back in the seat when it kicked in?
her car does a LITTLe, but not nearly as much as one would expect.. ESPECIALLY if its already running 14psi..

Well that is interesting. Were you able to find the intercooler next to the battery on the left? It might be that you don't have an intercooler and they set the turbo at five pounds. You can bring your boost by messing with the bleeder valve but it would be better to have a shop do it because if you bring up the boost you have to bring up the fuel as well or the engine will run lean. They have to do that with the computer. As for the boost controller you will also need another device that will bring up the fuel mixture ratio so once again you won't run lean. There is only one combo I suggest and the are from Apex-i and cost about about $800-1000 for both. Personally I would wait until you get it worked to buy into. those. As far as the octane goes, I wouldn't put anything but 91 in there. If I put anything lower in mine I get detonation. I would highly suggest you do the same. It will save you some money. And yes my car does put me back in my seat pretty good when that turbo spools up, when I really push it it causes the CD player to skip when I shift. It really snaps.

i found what LOOKS to be like an intercooler mounted right up next to the radiator almost.. its like the size of a book, not very big at all. i just talked to my mechanic and he said bring it and and he would check to see if i have a vacuum leak somewhere

The size of a book. Thats a lot smaller than mine. Mine is about two to three times that size. If you have a vacuum leak the car would idle high. But your mechanic should be able to tell you if that is an intercooler or not.

what exhuast system(cat-back) would you recommend and should i get dual tip or 1 larger tip(cus i like dual tipped exhausts)

Polygon is right if you want to up the boost you need to get a biger intercooler and buy those two apex-i -boost controller and fuel/air mixture controller-The combo he is mentioning cost $600-boost controller and about 400 for the mixture controller. But those are the top of the line apex-i and if you have the money get them. You can find cheaper stuff also from apex-i or greedy. The cheapest boost controller is about 170 also from apex-i but is not nearly as advanced as the expensive one but is should do the job.

But even if you do this you should take it to a performance shop where they can tune it properly. You don't make settings on those controllers out of the top or your head. Also cool thing for some boost controllers like the expensive apex-i you can get a button on the steering wheel like the nos buttons that will allow you to shift between high/low boost.

That is where the car should be idle is exaclty 900RPM. And that does sound like it would be the intercooler.

Well that all depends. If the exaust is as big as mine I would leave it alone. 2 1/2 inches is pretty big. I have left my exaust alone though I am going to wled a couple of tips to it for better looks. But if you are going to get one I would suggest over all Borla. They are by far the best out there, flowmaster sucks. I would also recommend Magnaflow, they are another good brand. Those are the only two that I personally like. Be sure to tell the shop that you take it to that you have a turbo and need the appropriate exaust.
