Question installing starter

ok i finally got the old starter out and the new one in. it works if not bolted up and goes clunk hitting flywheel and not spinning bolted up. been shimming it more and more. tried bolting it up twisted and it ground on flywheel. never had such a time installing a starter. saw previous thread something about wrong flywheel but wouldn't the starter be matched? truck ran fine before starter went so replacement should bolt up...shouldn't it? any suggestions?

fly wheel only one listed

the only post i've seen (i did a search) that sounds like mine said he was told the flywheel didn't match. i did a search of both autozone and a used parts site and both only list one flywheel for a 93. the reason i posted is because i've already shimmed (lets see 4- 1/32 and 2-1/16) 1/4 inch seems excessive

Re: installing starter

I'd loosen it way off, then try tightening it a little at a time... then switch to the other bolt thghten it up a little, and so on (mine wanted to go in twisted when I didn't do this)
