idle speed tooo high

I'm having a bit of a problem with my idle. i did a complete rebuild of my carb and i stil cannot get a decent idle speed. i tried adjusting the carb and checked for vacuum leaks. i hooked up a tack to the car and the best i can get to idle is 1500 rpm. thats not good i know. but the question i have is . would the valve adjustment have anything to do with it. no matter what i do it wont idle any less without stalling. its a 1600-71' in a 74 body. plus i have no idea on how to adjust the valves properly. anyone that can help please do. i really need it lol. thanks

It sounds to me ilke the idle cut-off solenoid is either not hooked up, hooked up incorrectly, or malfunctioning.

The solenoid is the cylindrical thing sticking out of the left side, near the bottom of the carb. The wire from this should go to the + terminal on the coil. When the key is on, power to this terminal of the coil opens the valve to the idle circuit. When the key is off, the valve shuts to avoid run-on.

To test the solenoid, remove the wire with the key on (engine off) and listen or feel for it to "click". If the wire is routed correctly and there's no click, then the solenoid is bad.

Re: idle speed tooo high

it could also be in the choke. i don't reember if a 71 motor has an auto matic choke, but mine was doing the same and the choke was farted up. as far as the valves..john muirs book how to keep your volkswagen alive...." is very specific on those things. i haven't gotten that far so i offer you nothing.
