A friend of mine drives a 1985 ramcharger. He has had to replace the uv joint in the rear at least 5 times. He has been troubleshooting this problem for at least 6 months and still cannot pinpoint the exact problem. Is anyone familiar with this?

UV = universal joint, right?

Is he getting any vibration while driving? Is everything in alignment underneath? Does he have the correct part(as in there may be more than one U joint that will fit). Does he have a built motor?

Guess I'm saying need more info.

Yes, I'm sorry, it is the U joint. He rebuilt most of the motor. He did everything he could to add horsepower and reclaim horsepower that was being used by the engine (put in an electric water pump, electric engine fans on the radiator, etc). I believe the allignment is ok. The truck is on a lift and has oversized tires. He thought the problem might have been caused by a slant due to the lift, so he got the piece with the correct angle, but the darn thing broke again. Do you think it might be a problem with the drive shaft?

OK so he's got the driveline angle correct. BUT he has oversized tires and has modified the engine to produce more power.

From what I've read, this is a classic example: he's beefed up both ends, but the weak point is the middle. I would think it's time to put a stouter set of Ujoints on there.
